Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (shin) was sore but "not as bad as he thought he might be" after being hit on the shin by a comebacker Thursday, July 24, according to manager Ron Gardenhire. Gardenhire believes Hughes will make his next start.

Fantasy Tip: Wait as long as you can before deciding to activate Hughes, but his matchup with the Padres is enticing.

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (shin) has been diagnosed with a shin bruise after X-rays came back negative. Manager Ron Gardenhire said the team hopes Hughes will be able to make his next scheduled start.

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes threw seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts to beat the San Diego Padres Wednesday, May 21. "It's not a drastic difference," said Hughes, who has gone 147 batters without a issuing a walk. "I'm just attacking the strike zone and staying aggressive and it has been working out the last few starts."

Fantasy Tip: Hughes has a 1.03 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings this month. He should be added if he's on the wire in mixed leagues.

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes is ditching his slider this year in favor of a cutter and curveball, and he threw around seven to eight curveballs in his intrasquad outing Thursday, Feb. 27, and will continue to mix the pitch in this spring. He threw his slider a career-high 23.8 percent last season and didn't throw a cutter at all. Hughes threw a cutter 16.1 percent of the time during his All-Star season in 2010.
