Twins | Phil Hughes won't miss any starts

Thu, 19 May 2016 18:19:59 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (shoulder) felt fine during his bullpen session and is expected to make his scheduled start versus the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday, May 22. He has been bothered by fatigue in his right shoulder over his last four starts.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes is 1-6 with a 5.70 ERA through his first eight outings this season and should not be viewed as a recommended fantasy option against Toronto.

Twins | Phil Hughes pitches well

Tue, 17 May 2016 21:50:09 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes allowed one run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Detroit Tigers Tuesday, May 17. He struck out one batter during the game and did not walk a batter.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes had been struggling before his start Tuesday but did lower his ERA to 5.70. He is scheduled to face the Toronto Blue Jays in his next start and probably should be avoided in all leagues.

Twins | Phil Hughes roughed up by long ball

Wed, 11 May 2016 14:55:01 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes allowed three home runs and five runs total on six hits while striking out four batters through four innings during the Twins' 9-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday, May 11.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes has allowed at least three earned runs in all but one of his seven starts this season and 15 through his past three outings. Sitting with a 6.44 ERA and 1.43 WHIP for the season, Hughes is a desperation own in the majority of seasonal leagues, and he cannot be started with confidence in any format until he shows improvement on the hill.

Twins | Phil Hughes gets smacked around

Wed, 04 May 2016 23:58:14 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes allowed six earned runs, six hits and two walks in just two innings in a loss Wednesday, May 4, against the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes slipped to 1-5 with a 5.85 ERA on the season. He just had some poor luck early on, as he went 1-3 in his first four outings, but they were all quality starts. However, it has gone off the rails over the past two outings, with Hughes going 0-2 with a 12.86 ERA. He cannot be trusted in any fantasy formats right now.

Twins | Phil Hughes decent in loss

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 00:06:45 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes did not allow a walk over six innings, making it the 56th straight start in which he has issued fewer than three free passes. Hughes still lost the start Thursday, April 7, in a 4-2 setback against the Baltimore Orioles.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes gave most of his owners a quality start in this game, as his lineup just didn't hit for him in a setback. Hughes won't surrender too many negative points for you, and he makes a solid fantasy starter if the Twins are healthy and hitting.

Twins | Phil Hughes opens spring well

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 19:05:31 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes worked two scoreless innings in his Grapefruit League spring debut Wednesday, March 4, against the Boston Red Sox, needing just 20 pitches while allowing one hit. He threw extra in the bullpen after the outing.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes posted an 11-9 record with a 4.40 ERA in 27 appearances (25 starts) last season, but he also 29 homers over 155 1/3 innings while striking out just 94. His strikeouts were way down, and his homers allowed were way up, after a sparkling 2014 campaign. He is worth a look as a back-end fantasy rotation filler in AL-only play and some deeper mixed formats. Hopefully you get 2014 Hughes rather than bad 2015 Hughes. If stats are an indication, a bounce-back season is likely, as he has pitched well in even-numbered years, and poorly in odd-numbered ones.

Twins | Phil Hughes lighter this spring

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 09:47:46 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes said he lost around 15 pounds this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Too much risk here for owners in shallow mixed leagues. Hughes' control should bounce back, but he doesn't miss enough bats and has a problem keeping balls in the yard, even in Minnesota.

Twins | Phil Hughes feeling better

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 13:59:26 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (illness) played catch and was feeling better Tuesday, Sept. 29. He is hoping he can pitch out of the bullpen Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen if Hughes ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) will make one more start this season sometime this weekend. However, even if he does, he'd be a weak FantasyScore play coming off an illness.

Twins | Tommy Milone starting against Cleveland

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 13:14:30 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Tommy Milone is starting against the Cleveland Indians Monday, Sept. 28, in place of SP Phil Hughes (illness).

Fantasy Tip: Milone ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) owns a 5.72 ERA through 11 appearances in the second half with an unattractive 6.6 K/9. FantasyScore players should view him as nothing more than a contrarian flier for contests Monday.

Twins | Phil Hughes scratched from start

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 13:08:28 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (illness) will not start against the Cleveland Indians Monday, Sept. 28. SP Tommy Milone will start in place of Hughes against Cleveland Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Hughes ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) in all fantasy formats Monday, and there is no telling what is next for him. View him as a desperation hold in seasonal leagues at this stage of the game. Milone ($5,600, 11.2% of cap), similarly, isn't a strong option for FantasyScore players Monday. He owns a 5.72 ERA through 11 appearances in the second half.
