Twins | Phil Hughes likely to start opener

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 14:15:28 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes is slated to start the opener against the Detroit Tigers April 6, according to manager Paul Molitor. Hughes went 16-10 with a 3.52 ERA in 32 starts last year for Minnesota, and he set a major league record with an 11.63 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Hughes threw 73% of his pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: It's safe to say Hughes will see some form of regression in his second season with the Twins. While Minnesota was a great landing spot for the righty, be careful not to overvalue him in 2015 after the solid season he had last year. If you prepare for a fall back to reality, Hughes can be serviceable on your fantasy roster rounding out your pitching staff.

Mon, 22 Dec 2014 06:14:36 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes signed a three-year, $42 million extension through 2019 Monday, Dec. 22. The deal supersedes the final two years and $16 million on his old deal. Hughes threw 209.2 innings to fall one out shy of a $500,000 bonus, but he declined the Twins' offer to let him pitch out of the bullpen during the final weekend to achieve the bonus. Hughes will earn $9.2 million in each of the next two seasons, then make $13.2 million in each of the three seasons between 2017-19. Hughes can block trades to three teams each year during the deal and will earn a $200,000 bonus in any season in which he reaches 200 innings.
