Twins | Phil Hughes throws bullpen

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 11:09:44 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (back) threw a successful 35-pitch bullpen session without setbacks Thursday, Sept. 3. He plans to throw another bullpen of around 40 to 45 pitches Sunday, Sept. 6, and then move to a simulated game next week. Hughes is still hoping he'll be able to return to the rotation before the end of the season, but he also noted that his back won't be fully healthy until the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Using a less-than 100% healthy Hughes ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) for what could be a handful of starts down the stretch in any fantasy format wouldn't be recommended.

Twins | Phil Hughes may throw

Sun, 30 Aug 2015 15:37:34 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (back) may throw off a mound later this week, according to Twins manager Paul Molitor.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) has been on the disabled list since Aug. 10, so he is eligible to come off. The fact he has a back injury may be enough to make any fantasy owner skittish, so you may be better off throwing him out for the time being.

Twins | Phil Hughes eyeing a side session

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 14:16:27 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (back) is improving and will throw Wednesday, Aug. 26, or Thursday, Aug. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) was placed on the disabled list Thursday, Aug. 13, so he'll likely need a little more time before he is ready to rejoin the rotation. He is worth stashing in the majority of formats, but if you need the roster spot to help with a late-season surge up the standings, Hughes isn't a must-keep arm. Continue to check back for updates on his progress.

Twins | Phil Hughes not progressing

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 19:52:41 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (back) is still experiencing pain, and manager Paul Monitor said his injury is "not turning around as fast as we hoped."

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) had been sputtering prior to the injury, and when he does return, make sure to take a wait-and-see approach at FantasyScore.

Twins | Phil Hughes rehab update

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 17:09:17 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (back) went through a pool workout Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: It is unknown when Hughes ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) will be able to return to action, although the fact that he is doing pool exercises proves that he is experiencing increased mobility. Continue to keep him stashed in AL-only seasonal leagues.

Twins | Phil Hughes placed on 15-day DL

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 10:02:46 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (back) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a back injury.

Fantasy Tip: SP Tommy Milone ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) will be activated from the disabled list to start at home against the Cleveland Indians Sunday, Aug. 16, and should remain in the rotation during Hughes' absence. He has a 3.76 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 57 strikeouts in 81 1/3 innings pitched this season. He is a matchup play on FantasyScore and has pitched better on the road than at home in pitcher-friendly Target Field.

Twins | Phil Hughes solid interleague option

Mon, 29 Jun 2015 22:22:47 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes will make his first career appearance against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, June 30. He is 9-4 with a 3.82 ERA in interleague play for his career.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,300; or 10.6% of cap) has pitched well in interleague play, and he is working against a youngster. The Reds are 4-13 in their past 17 interleague games, making Hughes an intriguing mid-level FantasyScore play.

Twins | Phil Hughes earns victory

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 19:23:24 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (6-6) allowed one run on six hits over eight innings in a victory over the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, June 24, with no walks and five strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) has recorded quality starts in each of his last four outings and he has a solid walk-to-strikeout ratio. However, he has allowed 17 home runs already this year, which is one more than he allowed during the entire 2014 season.

Twins | Phil Hughes lacking velocity

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 07:51:20 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes struggled to touch 90 mph in his last start Sunday, June 14. Hughes' fastball averaged 92-93 mph in recent seasons. Hughes has tapered off his between-starts bullpen sessions in favor of more long-tossing. He also has talked with strength and conditioning coordinator Perry Castellano about doing extra running in an effort to keep his lower half strong. "He's very frustrated," said Twins pitching coach Neil Allen, who says Hughes is down 2 mph with his four-seam fastball. "He can't compete the way he'd like to compete, so he's a little discouraged right now."

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) has a 4.79 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, and his 5.55 K/9 is the lowest of his career. He pitched markedly better in the second half last season, so there is hope for traditional leaguers. However, he's not an option to risk on FantasyScore right now.

Twins | Phil Hughes allowing homers

Sun, 14 Jun 2015 13:45:43 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes has allowed 15 home runs in 78 innings of work this season. Hughes allowed 16 homers in 210 innings in 2014.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) is doing well for owners in leagues with ratio as a stat (eight walks, 48 strikeouts), but his 4-6 record and 4.81 ERA shows signs of concern. Still, he had a 3.52 ERA in the last week, so he is showing signs of a turnaround.
