Athletics | Billy Butler prepping for rebound season

Mon, 25 Jan 2016 14:47:54 -0800

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler has ramped up his offseason conditioning routine leading into the 2016 campaign. "I think I'm getting older and I've got to do more things to stay young," Butler said. "I'm not old, but I'm old in baseball terms, getting there. It's one of those things where I've got to do more to keep up with these young bucks."

Fantasy Tip: Butler's batting average and RBI total has progressively dipped in each of the past three seasons following his career-best showing in 2012. Last year, Butler returned an underwhelming .251/.323/.390 slash line with just 15 home runs and 65 RBI, and at a deep fantasy position, it wasn't good enough to make him anything more than a cavernous mixed and AL-only option. He is an endgame flier to target in deep mixed league drafts entering the 2016 season.

Athletics | No Billy Butler against Angels

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 13:47:27 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Sept. 30. 2B Eric Sogard draws into the lineup and is batting seventh against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Butler ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) Wednesday, but it is worth noting he is finishing the season strong with a .316/.368/.551 slash line in September. FantasyScore players should view Sogard ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) as an ill-advised start Wednesday. He owns a career .314 slugging percentage and offers zero upside.

Athletics | Billy Butler homers again Thursday

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 17:30:27 -0700

Oakland Athletics DH Billy Butler hit a three-run homer against Chicago White Sox CL David Robertson Thursday, Sept. 17. It was his second home run in as many games.

Fantasy Tip: Butler ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) was probably disappointed to see the series against the White Sox come to an end. Over the last three games, he went 5-for-14 with a double, two home runs and eight RBIs, making him worthy of consideration as a FantasyScore value option.

Athletics | Billy Butler sitting out

Sat, 29 Aug 2015 15:37:59 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler is not in the starting lineup against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Jhoulys Chacin Saturday, Aug. 29, because the team is not using a designated hitter in a National League park.

Fantasy Tip: Butler ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) should return to the lineup when the team plays in an American League park again.

Athletics | No Billy Butler vs. Diamondbacks

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 15:31:17 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler is not in the starting lineup Friday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Without the option to utilize a designated hitter, Butler ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) draws out of the lineup Friday. He may grab a start or two during the road series, but you'll want to double-check before locking your lineups. He is hardly pushing the fantasy needle, though, with an underwhelming .202/.325/.279 slash line since the All-Star break.

Athletics | Billy Butler returns to lineup

Sun, 23 Aug 2015 12:33:06 -0700

Oakland Athletics DH Billy Butler will bat seventh against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi Sunday, Aug. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Butler ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is a somewhat risky play in FantasyScore today. He's batting just .182 in 55 at-bats this month, although he is 2-for-6 in his career against Odorizzi.

Athletics | Billy Butler has a seat

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 14:34:57 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler is out of the lineup Saturday, Aug. 22, with 1B Mark Canha hitting cleanup.

Fantasy Tip: Canha ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) has a .435-1-4 line the last seven days and is a good low-end start against Erasmo Ramirez on FantasyScore.

Athletics | Billy Butler draws into lineup

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 14:21:54 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler is serving as the designated hitter and batting sixth against Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey Wednesday, Aug. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Butler ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) had been losing playing time of late, but finds himself in the starting lineup tonight. However, Butler is a weaker daily option against Dickey, who has been lights out recently. Butler is also 2-for-12 (.167) with five strikeouts in his career against the knuckleballer.

Athletics | Billy Butler losing playing time

Tue, 11 Aug 2015 11:51:37 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler is not in the starting lineup for the third straight game Tuesday, Aug. 11. OF Danny Valencia is serving as the designated hitter and is batting cleanup against Toronto Blue Jays SP Drew Hutchison.

Fantasy Tip: The acquisition of Valencia last week has directly led to Butler's decrease in playing time. With less frequent at-bats, Butler is a candidate to be dropped in mixed leagues. Valencia ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is mainly a matchup play on FantasyScore against lefties, but he's not a bad daily play tonight against the struggling Hutchison in one of the best hitter's parks in baseball.

Athletics | Billy Butler dropped to seventh in order

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 16:56:50 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler has been dropped to seventh in the batting order Thursday, July 30, against Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco.

Fantasy Tip: It's really no surprise to see this happen, as Butler ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has been having a relatively woeful year in his first campaign with the A's. In fact, he's currently registering career lows in average (.246), on-base percentage (.312) and slugging percentage (.378). As a result, it's tough to trust him right now while he's still scuffling, and Carrasco is no easy pitcher to go up against.
