Tigers | Justin Verlander gained velocity in games

Wed, 27 Jan 2016 10:48:32 -0800

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander's fastball averaged 92.8 mph the first time through the order in 2015, 93.6 mph the second time through and 94.0 mph the third time through. He also used his fastball less as games went on. He used it 66.4% of the time the first time through, 53.7% the second time and 55.3% of the time the third time through the order. While Verlander gained velocity on his fastball, which he threw less often the deeper in the game he went, he got hit harder as the game went on. He allowed a .497, .705 and a .709 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, respectively, the first three times through the order. He had a 22.3% strikeout rate with the fastball last year, his highest ever, and much better than his career mark of 17.4%. Verlander often used a high-spin fastball high in the zone to get swing-and-misses.

Fantasy Tip: So while Verlander's velocity was down to 93.5 mph last season, there are still encouraging signs he can still be a high-quality pitcher at 33. Verlander can probably be had as an SP3 in drafts.

Tigers | Justin Verlander finishes strong

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 06:59:24 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out nine batters through six innings during the Tigers' 4-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox Saturday, Oct. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Over his final 11 starts, Verlander ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) returned a 2.12 ERA with 73 strikeouts through 76 1/3 innings. He also limited opposing hitters to a .194/.250/.286 slash line during the stretch. He stands as a viable mid-round option for drafts next spring, and the longer he lasts, the more upside there is for 2016.

Tigers | Justin Verlander has been great

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 10:55:58 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander has gone at least seven innings in nine of his last 12 starts, and opponents are batting just .203 against him over that time.

Fantasy Tip: After a slow start to the season because of injuries, Verlander ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) has been an excellent fantasy contributor in the second half with a return to full health, and the velocity on his fastball backs it up. He should be able to finish out the year strong and should be in consideration for a pitching spot in your daily lineups again his next time out.

Tigers | Justin Verlander reaches 99 mph

Wed, 23 Sep 2015 17:08:23 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (4-8) allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings in a victory over the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, Sept. 23, with three walks and eight strikeouts. He reached 99 mph several times on the radar gun near the end of his outing, prompting manager Brad Ausmus to say that it was the first time he had seen him throw that hard since he took over last season.

Fantasy Tip: The increased velocity Verlander ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) demonstrated Wednesday is an encouraging sign, especially considering that he was sidelined until mid-June because of an arm injury. He said the same effort would have only resulted in him reaching the mid-90s on the radar gun earlier this year. Verlander will make his next scheduled start against the Texas Rangers Monday, Sept. 28.

The game between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians for Friday, Sept. 11, has been postponed due to inclement weather. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday, Sept. 13. Tigers SP Justin Verlander had been slated to take on Indians SP Cody Anderson.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure you immediately take out any Tigers or Indians players you may have had in your FantasyScore lineups tonight.

Tigers | No support for Justin Verlander

Sun, 06 Sep 2015 16:55:02 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander is receiving 2.8 runs of support per nine innings following his start Sunday, Sept. 6, and the rest of Detroit's pitchers are receiving 4.46 runs of support per nine innings.

Fantasy Tip: Verlander ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) has allowed two earned runs or less in seven of his last nine starts, but he has just three wins during the stretch. He is still striking out enough batters to warrant consideration at FantasyScore when he draws a friendly matchup, but don't expect him to pick up the win.

White Sox | Tyler Saladino hitting second on Tuesday

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 13:47:08 -0700

Chicago White Sox 3B Tyler Saladino is hitting second for the second time in three days. Saladino is up against Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander.

Fantasy Tip: Saladino ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) may be batting second to rejuvenate his bat. Most of his action (.245-3-14) comes from the second spot in the lineup, so if you're looking for a low-cost third baseman on FantasyScore he is a decent option.

Royals | Mike Moustakas out of Tuesday lineup

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 13:14:36 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 1, against the Detroit Tigers. 2B Ben Zobrist is playing third and batting second against Tigers SP Justin Verlander.

Fantasy Tip: Moustakas ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) is hitting just .189 against Verlander, and the left vs. right matchup provides the Royals the excuse to give "Moose" a night off. Zobrist ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) has a .346 average in the past week and hits .257 against Verlander, so he is a decent FantasyScore option.

Royals | Alex Gordon in Tuesday lineup

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 13:09:51 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Gordon (groin) was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list and is in the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 1. He is hitting sixth against Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander.

Fantasy Tip: The return of Gordon ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) will be a breath of fresh air to the team. Ordinarily advice would be to sit a hitter for a game or two until he gets his sea legs back, and this may apply here as well. It might take Gordon a few at-bats to get unwound.

Tigers | Vintage Justin Verlander in victory

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 21:24:55 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander lost a bid for his third no-hitter in the ninth inning Wednesday, Aug. 26, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He settled for a one-hit shutout.

Fantasy Tip: Verlander's ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) outing was, by far, his best of the season. He faced just one batter over the minimum. It was his seventh shutout, and first in over three years. FantasyScore players should be encouraged by Verlander's performance, especially against a quality offense, but give him at least one more start to prove he has turned it around before trusting him again.
