Reds | Homer Bailey a month from rehab stint

Wed, 11 May 2016 13:51:40 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) is approximately a month away from beginning a rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey is a long way away from helping fantasy owners, and there are no guarantees about how well he'll fare once he returns. He has thrown just 11 1/3 innings since August, 7, 2014, after all. At this stage, he isn't a must-stash hurler in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Reds | Homer Bailey resumes rehab

Sun, 08 May 2016 16:29:52 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) resumed throwing every other day Thursday, May 5, and he felt good after his session Saturday, May 7.

Fantasy Tip: The Reds will continue to take it slow with Bailey as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, but if you have the roster spot to spare, he is worth stashing.

Reds | Homer Bailey shut down for 5-7 days

Mon, 02 May 2016 17:00:04 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) said he expects to be shut down for five to seven days.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey suffered a bit of a setback within the past week, so this probably pushes his return to the major leagues back a little bit further. Given his track record, he's worth stashing in just about all leagues, but with this latest news, owners shouldn't be surprised if his return is delayed until the summer months.

Reds | Homer Bailey makes rehab start

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 20:14:33 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) allowed five runs - one earned - and six hits over four innings in his second minor-league rehab start Tuesday, April 26, for Class AA Pensacola.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. He isn't a bad stash option in NL-only fantasy leagues and some deeper mixed formats, but he still has a while before he is fantasy relevant again.

Reds | Homer Bailey set for second rehab start

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 16:31:48 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) will make his second rehab start for Class AA Pensacola Tuesday, April 26.

Fantasy Tip: The 29-year-old had his first rehab outing five days ago and looked promising, displaying solid command and picking up six strikeouts in less than four innings of work. He'll have potential to contribute right away when he makes it back to the majors. Before going down with Tommy John last year, Bailey had accumulated 33 wins, not to mention a no-hitter, in the prior three seasons.

Reds | Homer Bailey OK in first rehab start

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 10:36:38 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) made his first rehab start for Class AAA Louisville Thursday, April 21. He went 3 2/3 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out six. In all, Bailey threw 67 pitches, 47 of which were for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Since it was his first rehab outing, there's probably more good to take away from this than bad, as Bailey's command appeared to be fine, and it's a positive sign he racked up as many strikeouts as he did right away. Based on his track record, the 29-year-old has potential to be a permanent contributor to fantasy rosters of all leagues, so his progress should be monitored.

Reds | Homer Bailey to pitch Friday

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 16:22:15 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) will pitch in his first rehab start for Class AAA Louisville Friday, April 22, since having Tommy John surgery last May 8.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey could return sometime next month or possibly in June. He's probably a forgotten man in most fantasy leagues, but he's a stash candidate in keeper and NL-only leagues since his pre-injury skills were consistent and solid. However, we understand if there are reservations about rostering Bailey, since it's been almost two full years since he's pitched in the big leagues.

Reds | Homer Bailey rehab update

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 08:44:09 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) threw more than 50 pitches over 2 2/3 innings during his final extended spring training start Saturday, April 16. According to general manager Dick Williams, most of his pitches were between 91 and 94 mph, with his fastest pitch being clocked at 96 mph. Bailey will rejoin the team on Monday, April 18, but needs to make at least four rehab appearances before being activated from the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: It appears as though Bailey won't be able to return from Tommy John surgery until mid-May at the earliest. Keep him stashed in all seasonal formats.

Reds | Homer Bailey ahead of schedule

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 16:11:10 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) threw two innings of live batting practice Thursday, March 24, for the second time this spring. Manager Bryan Price said the Reds are eyeing a quicker return for Bailey, and he could return around May 1. Bailey had Tommy John surgery May 8 of last season. Price wants Bailey to receive a minimum of six starts or stretched out to 95 to 100 pitches before he's ready. Bailey topped out at 92 mph on the radar gun Thursday. He's been throwing without pain since September, and his next step is a simulated game.

Fantasy Tip: Most teams these days practice caution with pitchers coming back from Tommy John surgery, but not the Reds in this case. It doesn't seem wise, especially for a pitcher that hasn't thrown much at all in the last two years. Bailey's pre-injury form was decent, but you can't expect much from him in 2016.

Reds | Homer Bailey throws to live hitters

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 21:06:14 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) threw live batting practice Monday, March 21. It was his first time facing live batting since undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery. He is expected to have two more live BP sessions before working in a simulated game and then a minor-league rehab game sometime in April.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey might be back sometime in May, but it could take him the entire first half to work out the kinks, knock off the rust and get back into a groove after such a long layoff and intensive rehab after a major injury.
