Joe Smith, in "The Heater" blog at tampabay.com, reports Tampa Bay Rays P Wade Townsend (shoulder) has undergone surgery on his right shoulder and is considered doubtful to pitch in 2009, according to director of minor league operations Mitch Lukevics. He has a history of injuries, including Tommy John surgery, and had been shut down after making three starts in the Arizona Fall League this year.

Updating an earlier item, Carter Gaddis, of The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Devil Rays minor league P Wade Townsend (elbow), who was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow after injuring it while pitching in the Arizona Fall League, is due to be examined by the team's orthopedist next week to determine if or when Tommy John surgery would be performed.

The Tampa Tribune's Scott Carter reports the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have reached a contract agreement with P Wade Townsend, the eighth overall pick in the 2005 first-year player draft. The Devil Rays are expected to announce the signing of Townsend at a news conference June 10. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
