The Tampa Bay Rays recalled SP Alex Cobb from Triple-A Durham Friday, May 18, to start the game Saturday, May 19, against the Atlanta Braves in place of the injured SP Jeff Niemann (leg). The team optioned P Josh Lueke to Durham in the corresponding move.

Updating a previous report, X-rays revealed Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeff Niemann (fibula) has a "small fracture" to the right fibula. He was forced from his start Monday, May 14, after being struck by a comebacker. Manager Joe Maddon said Niemann will likely miss at least a few months, but is expected back this season.

He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but was unable to finish like his college teammate at Rice University. Niemann was a college teammate of Chicago White Sox SP Philip Humber, who pitched a perfect game Saturday, April 21.
