Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeff Niemann (shoulder) has chosen to undergo surgery to fix the labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The procedure will end his 2013 season. The surgery will likely take place Wednesday, April 10.

Fantasy Tip: Go ahead and drop Niemann in all formats if he's still on your roster.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeff Niemann (shoulder) won't see a doctor until Tuesday, April 9, but the possibility remains that he may need surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Niemann isn't close to returning and he doesn't even have a rotation spot available if he's able to avoid surgery. It's safe to drop him in all formats.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeff Niemann (shoulder) said he has not underwent an MRI at this point to see what is wrong with his shoulder. He is scheduled to be examined Monday, April 8, and expects an MRI to be taken at that time.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeff Niemann (shoulder) said his shoulder injury is similar to the one he dealt with last September. There is no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: There could be a more serious injury at work here, which is even more reason to cut bait with Niemann in mixed leagues. In deep AL-only leagues, you might want to hang on a bit longer to see if this is something he can come back from quickly.

The Tampa Bay Rays placed SP Jeff Niemann (shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder soreness Friday, April 5, and recalled P Brandon Gomes in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: This explains Niemann's drop in velocity this spring and likely had to do with him losing out on the No. 5 rotation spot to Roberto Hernandez. He can now safely be dropped in mixed leagues.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeff Niemann has been placed in the bullpen. SP Roberto Hernandez has won the fifth spot in the rotation. The team said they wanted Niemann to build up arm strength and could return to the rotation sometime this year.
