Angels | Homer support saves Jered Weaver

Sun, 31 May 2015 04:37:18 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver won Saturday, May 30, as his team beat the Detroit Tigers 8-6. The Angels homered five times in the first two innings to support Weaver. In his previous 10 starts the Angels only homered six times.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) won't get this type of support in every game, but as long as the Angels are hitting very well like this then he becomes a more attractive FantasyScore pitcher.

Angels | Jered Weaver continues resurgence

Wed, 20 May 2015 19:34:29 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver continued his bounce back from a poor start to the 2015 season Wednesday, May 20, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Weaver allowed four hits and three runs, but picked up his third consecutive win. Weaver is 3-0 with a 1.54 ERA in his last three outings after losing four of his first six.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) hasn't struck out more than six batters in any one outing, drastically limiting his potential on FantasyScore. Weaver represents too much risk without the potential upside to be a regular FantasyScore option.

Angels | Jered Weaver just so-so at Rogers Center

Wed, 20 May 2015 14:32:55 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver has a 3-1 record with a 4.32 ERA over four starts against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Center. Weaver faces the Blue Jays in Toronto Wednesday, May 20.

Fantasy Tip: It wouldn't be shocking to see soft-tossing Weaver ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) suffer through a rough outing against the No.1-ranked scoring offense in the league. Through eight starts, Weaver has four showings with two or fewer runs allowed and four outings with four or more runs allowed. Given his inconsistency, FantasyScore players should view Weaver as huge-risk, modest-reward start Wednesday, especially considering his lack of punchouts (4.3 K/9 this season).

Angels | Jered Weaver has bounce-back start

Sat, 09 May 2015 05:34:27 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver allowed just six hits while striking out six batter during his complete-game shutout against the Houston Astros Friday, May 8.

Fantasy Tip: Those who have been patient with Weaver ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) were rewarded, but it is understandable if you relegated him to the bench or waiver wire after his awful start to the season. Through his first seven starts, Weaver has allowed two or fewer runs in three of them, and he has allowed at least four earned runs in the other four. His strikeouts are also down (4.4 K/9 this season vs. 7.4 career mark). Until Weaver strings together a few solid starts, he is nothing more than a high-risk, high-reward flier for FantasyScore contests. In seasonal leagues, his ownership should be limited to deep mixed and AL-only formats.

Angels | Jered Weaver looking for answers

Wed, 06 May 2015 11:36:00 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver may be dealing with "release point" issues and problems with "a timing issue in his delivery," according to manager Mike Scioscia. Weaver's average fastball velocity is at 84.24 mph this year, which is three full ticks slower that it was in each of the last years and behind only Toronto Blue Jays SP Mark Buehrle for the slowest among non-knuckleball-throwing pitchers. "If he doesn't pick up any more velocity but he matches it with command," Scioscia said, "he's going to be fine." Weaver doesn't plan to make any wholesale changes to his pitch repertoire this year.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) isn't doing anything right and can't get away with his mistakes when his velocity is down. All isn't lost for him, but he'll definitely need to make adjustments in order to avoid this being a season-long trend. For the time being, you shouldn't want Weaver going anywhere near your lineups.

Angels | No answers for Jered Weaver

Mon, 04 May 2015 10:43:24 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver, who is 0-4 with a 6.29 ERA to start the year in six winless starts, is dealing with diminished fastball velocity, and he hasn't had consistent command of his curve ball and changeup, either. Opponents have a .308 average against him with eight home runs on the season. "I'm pretty much serving (batting practice) up there now," a frustrated Weaver said. "I have to work with what I've got. … I'm not hurt. Everything feels good. It feels like it's coming out a lot better than it is. It's weird, man. I don't know. I've got no answers." Manager Mike Scioscia isn't to the point where he's considering skipping one of Weaver's starts or demoting him to the bullpen, though.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) should be avoided in all FantasyScore contests until he shows some improvement. He should also be benched in standard fantasy leagues until further notice.

Angels | Jered Weaver's struggles continue

Sun, 03 May 2015 16:36:27 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver fell to 0-4 on the year, allowing five runs on 10 hits in five innings in a loss to the San Francisco Giants Sunday, May 3, and his ERA climbed to 6.24 for the year.

Fantasy Tip: Not only is Weaver ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) being shelled on a routine basis, but he has managed just 15 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings. He should be avoided at FantasyScore until he shows signs of turning things around.

Angels | Skipper endorses Jered Weaver

Sun, 12 Apr 2015 05:17:11 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver received an endorsement from manager Mike Scioscia Saturday, April 11, after Weaver's second consecutive poor outing to start the season. "He's going to be fine," Scioscia said. "This is really just a release point issue with Weave right now. He'll figure it out. He always does. He'll be there for us."

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners should have less optimism. Weaver ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) is all smoke and mirrors at this stage of his career, as his velocity has been in a free fall for a few seasons. Still, he is a viable option for FantasyScore players in favorable matchups, although it would be nice to see Weaver have a a tidy outing before taking a leap of faith. In deeper seasonal leagues, Weaver's value might present a nice buying opportunity, too.

Angels | Jered Weaver yanked early

Sat, 11 Apr 2015 19:34:24 -0700

Los Angeles Angels SP Jered Weaver failed to make it through the fifth-inning, Saturday, April 11, against the Kansas City Royals, for just the second time in two-plus seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) lasted just 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, four walks and six earned runs while striking out five batters. The bad numbers were slightly inflated due to two home runs. It is odd seeing such a bad line for Weaver include a high number of strikeouts. If Weaver can keep up the high strikeout rate, he could become a very strong daily option, as the rest of the numbers from Saturday should normalize rather quickly.

Angels | Skipper not worried about Jered Weaver

Thu, 09 Apr 2015 10:01:49 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver's average four-seam fastball velocity was 83.5 mph on opening day Monday, April 6, but manager Mike Scioscia is not worried. The velocity was the slowest of Weaver's career. Scioscia said Weaver was "out of sync" with his mechanics during his outing against the Seattle Mariners.

Fantasy Tip: Despite a velocity dip in 2014, Weaver ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) still had a 7.1 K/9 and 169 strikeouts in 213 1/3 innings. However, a further dip in velocity has to be concerning if it comes with a decrease in swings and misses. Residing in a home ball park that limits homers helps, though, and he should continue to be serviceable in the right matchups for fantasy owners.
