Angels | Jered Weaver tosses tidy outing

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 14:53:33 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver allowed a single run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts through seven innings to record his second win of the season against the Chicago White Sox Thursday, April 21.

Fantasy Tip: Don't be fooled by the strong outing from Weaver, especially because he has just seven strikeouts through his first 17 1/3 innings this season. The veteran has limited fantasy value. Additionally, his ERA had climbed four consecutive years leading into 2016. Weaver is nothing more than a streaming option in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Angels | Jered Weaver using lower arm slot

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 20:24:19 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (neck, shoulder) allowed one run on six hits over six innings in a win over the Texas Rangers Sunday, April 10, and said the stiffness he dealt with this spring is improving. He is also using a lower arm slot to help make his delivery more comfortable and improve the speed of his fastball. "The arm slot is coming back," Weaver said. "There's no tightness in my shoulder, no tightness in my back, no tightness in my hip. I'm feeling healthy. I can pitch like this for the rest of the season, but I know it's only going to get better."

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Weaver is doing everything he can to remain effective, but he is not the same pitcher that was in the Cy Young conversation a few seasons ago. At best, he figures to be a matchup play if he remains healthy.

Angels | Jered Weaver says he's starting Sunday

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 15:36:38 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (neck, back) said he will start Sunday, April 10, after he hit 86 mph on the radar gun in a simulated game Tuesday, April 5.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver has quickly fallen in fantasy circles because of decreased velocity and injuries. He fails to miss many bats with his batting practice fastball and also struggles to keep the ball in the yard. That's not a combination any fantasy owners wants on their staff.

Angels | Jered Weaver talks mound approach

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 15:43:21 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver was experimenting with pitches during his minor league start Wednesday, March 30. "When you are throwing stuff that I'm throwing, you have to invent some stuff to keep people off balance," Weaver said. "It was pretty fun actually."

Fantasy Tip: It isn't likely to be much fun for Weaver and his fantasy owners next week against major league hitters. With his career clearly in decline, view the veteran as a low-end arm in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. A crafty mound routine can only mask his shortcomings for so long, after all.

Angels | Jered Weaver beat around in minors start

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 14:39:36 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver allowed a three-run and solo home run through six innings of a minor league start Wednesday, March 30. He also struck out four batters and walked one.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver is battling concerns around his low velocity, and his ERA has increased in four consecutive seasons and settled at a confidence-shattering 4.64 last year. He relies on a smoke-and-mirrors approach on the mound, and allowing two home runs to minor league hitters Wednesday should raise more red flags. Weaver is nothing more than a low-end option in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Angels | Jered Weaver to open on DL?

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 10:45:53 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (neck, back) is a candidate to open the season on the disabled list. He could make another spring start April 4 or 5 and make his season debut April 10 or 11.

Fantasy Tip: This is basically a procedural move, as the Angels won't need a fifth starter until after the first week of the season, and they can give Weaver some more rest. His injury and continued drop in velocity makes him extremely hittable these days. You'll likely want to avoid Weaver in all fantasy formats.

Angels | Jered Weaver rediscovers arm angle

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 15:14:05 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (neck, back) found a three-quarters arm slot he has not been able to throw from in three years during his Cactus League outing Friday, March 25.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver's ERA has climbed in four consecutive seasons and topped out at 4.64 in 2015. His velocity is currently hovering around 80 mph, and his smoke-and-mirrors act clearly hasn't done the trick during his statistical decline. At best, Weaver is a desperation flier in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, but you should likely look elsewhere.

Angels | Jered Weaver makes spring outing

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 14:54:41 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (neck, back) allowed three runs (two solo home runs) in five innings in his Cactus League outing Friday, March 25, and he didn't have much velocity on his pitchers, but he kept the Oakland Athletics off balance with softer stuff.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver isn't lighting up the radar gun these days and won't fool many hitters. On top of it, he will likely have to manage pain connected with neck and back ailments. It all adds up to a pitcher you'll want to avoid like the plague in all mixed leagues and probably in AL-only setups, too.

Angels | Jered Weaver to throw Friday

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 16:22:07 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (neck, back) will make his next spring start Friday, March 25, against the Oakland Athletics. He hasn't thrown in a Cactus League game since March 9, when he topped out at 81 mph. He allowed three runs on 67 pitches in a minor league game Sunday, March 20, and his velocity was between 79 and 81 mph. Manager Mike Scioscia said Weaver is "moving in the right direction."

Fantasy Tip: Weaver will have to tolerate pain while pitching this year. That's not a good combination for an aging pitcher who is throwing batting practice fastballs to hitters. Let someone else make Weaver their problem in fantasy leagues.

Angels | Jered Weaver to pitch Sunday

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 12:16:57 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (neck, back) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, March 16, and again Thursday, March 17. If he doesn't have any setbacks, he'll pitch in a minor league contest Sunday, March 20, so that the Angels can control his innings to about four innings or 60 pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver plans to be ready for opening day despite dealing with degenerative spine issues and a bulging disc in his back. His declining velocity and inability to miss bats was already enough of a reason to avoid him in mixed leagues without the injuries.
