Angels | Jered Weaver tuned up in H-Town

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 21:19:36 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver allowed six earned runs, seven hits and three walks with just one strikeout over four innings in a loss Saturday, July 23, against the Houston Astros. He threw just 51 of his 84 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver is 8-8 with a 5.32 ERA overall and should only be rostered in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues at this point. He is 0-3 with a 9.39 ERA in three outings against the Astros this season, so remember that and avoid him next time Houston pops up on the schedule.

Astros | Evan Gattis draws a start

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 14:04:03 -0700

Houston Astros C Evan Gattis is in the starting lineup and will bat eighth against Los Angeles Angels SP Jered Weaver on Saturday, July 23.

Fantasy Tip: Gattis isn't the defender Jason Castro is being the plate and has seen his usual designated hitter role filled by a number of players lately, in part due to his .218 average. He's still worth starting in most 12-team-or-larger leagues due to his power, but owners need to recognize the at-bats might not be there like they once were.

Angels | Jered Weaver slows White Sox

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 16:12:50 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver allowed one run on six hits while walking one and striking out one over seven innings in a win over the Chicago White Sox Sunday, July 17.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver has allowed one run or less in three of his last five starts, but he has a 5.02 ERA overall and poor strikeout totals. At best, he is a roll-of-the-dice play in DFS formats against friendly matchups.

Angels | Jered Weaver dominates Pale Hose

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 21:33:31 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver will face the Chicago White Sox Sunday, July 17. He is 11-2 with a 1.94 ERA in 14 career starts against the White Sox, and 7-0 against them since 2011.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver is coming off a quality start and win at Tampa Bay, allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts over six innings. He has struggled with a 6.18 ERA in nine starts at home this season, but with his dominance of the White Sox he is a must-start fantasy option in daily leagues and DFS play for Sunday.

Angels | Jered Weaver has been bad

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 12:45:48 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver hasn't gone more than 5 1/3 innings since a three-hit shutout against the Oakland Athletics June 19 and has allowed 10 runs in his last two starts combined. Weaver has also surrendered 20 home runs, including at least one in all but two starts.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver just isn't fooling anyone with his smoke-and-mirrors act on the mound. He has an ugly 5.51 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and is striking out just 5.1 hitters per nine innings. Avoid him in all fantasy formats.

Angels | Jered Weaver roughed up by Houston

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 18:46:52 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver allowed six earned runs, seven hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings with three strikeouts in a loss Wednesday, June 29, against the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver slipped below .500 on the season, and he has a 5.51 ERA with a subpar 1.48 WHIP. His numbers across the board are well over his career averages and he is only worth using in larger AL-only fantasy formats at this point of his career.

Angels | Jered Weaver blanks Oakland

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 17:37:34 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver tossed a three-hit shutout against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, June 19, walking one and striking out one.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver had allowed 11 runs in 11 1/3 innings in his previous two starts, and he owns a 5.10 ERA for the year. There is no need to run out and add Weaver.

Angels | Jered Weaver rocked Monday

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 05:22:28 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver took the loss and dropped to 5-6 overall Monday, June 13, in a 9-4 defeat against the Minnesota Twins. Weaver allowed eight hits and six runs in six innings, taking his fifth loss in seven starts. The veteran right-hander has allowed 18 homers this season, the most in the majors.

Fantasy Tip: It is unknown whether Weaver's preseason injury issues, or just plain ineffectiveness, is at fault here, but if this continues the team might step in and shut Weaver down or address the problem. It is clear Weaver is slumping and should not be used in any format.

Angels | Jered Weaver discusses his struggles

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 13:18:31 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver said his lack of fastball velocity has limited the deception and effectiveness of his changeup.

"When you're not throwing as hard velocity-wise, it's not going to have the same effect," Weaver said. "I'm still working hard to try to get some velo back, and trying to maintain it. Until that happens, it's probably not going to be as effective a pitch as it was in the past."

Fantasy Tip: Weaver's analysis sounds as encouraging as his current 5.56 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 5.4 K/9 look. He cannot be started with confidence, and he shouldn't be owned outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. Even in those deep settings, there isn't a lot to be optimistic about.
