MLB | Bush agrees to deal in assault case

Brent Schrotenboer, of The San Diego Union-Tribune, reports free-agent P Matt Bush (Blue Jays) reached a deal with prosecutors Friday, July 10, after pleading guilty to four counts of misdemeanor simple battery stemming from his alleged assault Feb. 4. He also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving involving alcohol, vandalism and resisting arrest stemming from his June 28 arrest on a drunken driving charge. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 21.

Updating a previous item, the North County Times' John Maffei reports San Diego Padres P Matt Bush, who is transitioning to pitching after 3 1-2 sub-par seasons as a shortstop, will remain with Class A Lake Elsinore to throw bullpen and side sessions until the Arizona League begins this summer, according to Grady Fuson, the team's director of scouting and player development. He won't be used in games for Lake Elsinore, however. "This is going to be a challenge for Matt," said Fuson. "But he's happy with the change and looking forward to it."

Initially the Padres diagnosed the injury as a sprained ankle, but a recent X-ray revealed a nondisplaced fracture.

Updating a previous item, Bernie Wilson, of the Associated Press, reports suspended San Diego Padres SS Matt Bush, the team's first-round draft pick, allegedly bit a bouncer on the arm during a bar room scuffle over the previous weekend, according to the police. Bush was arrested on suspicion of felony assault, and misdemeanor trespass and disorderly conduct, as well as being cited for underage drinking. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for July 6, while the Maricopa County Attorney's Office will review the police report and determine which charges to file. Bush was to report to the team's offices in San Diego Tuesday, June 22, to receive a physical and meet with team officials. The team is looking into the arrest and further into Bush's background, but hasn't decided yet on any further disciplinary actions that might be taken.
