Chris Perkins reports for the Sun-Sentinel odds are the Miami Dolphins won't be trading up in the NFL Draft or signing any big name free agents. "We’re not one player away from being a Super Bowl team," coach Dave Wannstedt said. As it has done to this point, the Dolphins will proceed fairly cautiously through the draft and the remaining free agency period. The team has re-signed some of their own players and added some mid-level free agents such as WR James McKnight, QB Ray Lucas and G Todd Perry. They will turn their attention to the draft and the post-draft free agent market. Wannstedt said there’s nothing new to report on the Dolphins other remaining free agents, S Brock Marion, OT Richmond Webb and LB Robert Jones. The Dolphins want them back, but not at the price their agents are currently seeking. The Chicago Tribune reports the Chicago Bears are anticipating a spirited battle at their quarterback position this year. QBs Cade McNown, Jim Miller and Shane Matthews are all in the hunt for the starting job this season and all three have incentive based contracts that would make them a lot wealthier if they land the starting job and play well. McNown, for example, could see his base salary raise from $350,000 in 2002 and $375,000 in 2003 to $3.7 million and $4.45 million, respectively, if he's able to handle 70% of the team's snaps this year. In other news, the Bears players really wanted the team to keep OL Todd Perry, who departed earlier this year to the Dolphins. Three offensive starters offered to restructure to help the team open more room under the cap to re-sign him. The Bears didn't act on the offers and Perry departed.

Another possibility could be to move Jerry Wisne from tackle back to guard. After letting RB Curtis Enis depart and tendering RB James Allen only a one-year deal, the team may be thinking of taking a RB in the first round of the NFL Draft. LaDainian Tomlinson, Michael Bennett and Deuce McAllister are three backs the Bears like, but they may be hesitant to take a RB in the first round for the third time in seven years, especially with their bad fortunes with RBs Rashaan Salaam and Enis.
