AtlantaFalcons.com reports the Atlanta Falcons are unlikely to re-sign free agent RB Travis Jervey after the team drafted RB Quincy Wilson (West Virginia) in the seventh round. "I don't see us re-signing Travis," general manager Rich McKay said. "I don't rule it out, but I don't see it."

Updating previous reports, Atlanta Falcons RB Travis Jervey (neck/forearm) will have his stained neck evaluated Tuesday, Dec. 23, after suffering the injury in the third quarter of Week 16. He also injured his left forearm in the game. Jervey may be ruled OUT for Week 17 and possibly placed on injured reserve.

Atlanta Falcons RB/ST Travis Jervey (forearm/neck) injured his left forearm during a kickoff return coverage, according to AtlantaFalcons.com. X-rays taken in the locker room were negative, and he later returned to the game. However, Jervey left the game again with 3:27 remaining in the third quarter, after suffering a neck sprain.

Jervey might not play in the Saturday, August 9 pre-season game against the Green Bay Packers if the Falcons coaching staff decide to delay him from full-contact drills a little longer as he continues his comeback from a major knee injury.

AtlantaFalcons.com reports two players injured in last week's pre-season game, DT Travis Hall (ankle sprain) and LB Matt Stewart (hip flexor) missed practice earlier today. Coach Reeves is hoping they can return to practice Wednesday after the team takes tomorrow off. The other injured Falcons were: DB Ronnie Bradford (knee), CB Conrad Hamilton (hamstring), RB Travis Jervey (elbow), LB Antony Jordan (back), WR Quentin McCord (hamstring) DT Shawn Swayda (knee) and CB Darrick Vaughn (hamstring). All of those players were able to practice with no apparent problems.

Thomas and Jervey are both expected to battle with second-year back Maurice Smith for playing time behind starter Jamal Anderson and both are also expected to help improve the Falcons' special teams this year.

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers have enough room to be somewhat active in the free agent market now that RB Travis Jervey was released. The 49ers are now about $1 million under the salary cap. GM Bill Walsh has that money being aimed at free agent LB Derek Smith (Redskins) and re-signing OT Scott Gragg. Walsh stated the team is closer to a deal with Smith than they are with Gragg, but noted Gragg is the team's main focus. The team has yet to offer a deal to free agent DL Brentson Buckner. The team is still interested in RB Terry Kirby, but Walsh said the team isn't looking to sign him until after June 1. Mike Battle, Kirby's agent, anticipates Kirby signing with another team within the next week.

He was scheduled to make roughly $850,000 in base salary in 2001. The team has three RBs on the roster now, Garrison Hearst, Paul Smith and Jonas Lewis.

ESPN's John Clayton reports San Francisco 49ers RB Travis Jervey stated he still won't restructure his deal with the team. He is due a $100,000 signing bonus at the end of his current deal. Releasing Jervey, as the 49ers stated they'd do if he wouldn't restructure, will save the team $595,000 under the salary cap.

On the free agent front, OT Scott Gragg is a high priority for the 49ers right now. The team is still about $600,000 under the salary cap. Gragg wants to see what the 49ers offer before visiting with other teams. The saga surrounding RB Travis Jervey should be resolved in the next week. He'll either take a pay cut or be released. DT Brentson Buckner, RB Charlie Garner and S Zack Bronson are also high on the priority list. The team is looking at other free agents, too, but didn't want to say who at this time. They have talked with DT Dana Stubblefield (Redskins), but haven't scheduled a visit.

As an update to previous reports, KFFL has learned San Francisco 49ers DT Bryant Young has been given a six-year contract extension worth $38 million and it includes a $12.5 million signing bonus. By signing the new deal, it opens $2.429 million under the salary cap. In other news, negotiations with RB Travis Jervey continue as the team is still requesting he take a pay cut.

Matt Maiocco reports for the Press Democrat the contract restructure by San Francisco 49ers WR Terrel Owens will save the team $2.5 million. The continues to work on a contract extension for DT Bryant Young, as well as negotiations with RB Travis Jervey, GM Bill Walsh said. The team wants enough cap space to hold serious negotiations with scheduled free agents RB Charlie Garner, OT Scott Gragg and DT Brentson Buckner. Jeff Ulbrich, now that Ken Norton has been released and Winfred Tubbs is about to be released, has been penciled in as a starter at one of the vacant linebacker positions. The 49ers will release Tubbs today, Walsh said, with a cap savings of approximately $750,000.

Stokes (all previously reported), and also making nine tender offers earlier today, they remain nearly $6 million over the salary cap. "We are still working on new contracts for WR Terrell Owens, DT Bryant Young and RB Travis Jervey, but we're making progress on each of them," said VP John McVay.

He is also awaiting a potential offer from the Chiefs. The article says the Seahawks tried to become late players in the Jervey game but they bowed out when they heard what the 49ers had offered. Either way, it looks like Jervey's Packers career is nearing an end.

The Saint Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Rams will finish up a visit with LB Mavcus Patton of the Redskins today. They also have met with LB Todd Collins (NE) and WR Sean Dawkins (NO). The team is also talking with RB Travis Jervey although no formal visit has been scheduled. The Rams lack the salary cap money to add a significant Free Agent but they plan to continue their evaluations of players.
