John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans LB Morlon Greenwood feels more comfortable in the team's current 4-3 scheme. He was originally signed to play inside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme after playing outside with the Miami Dolphins. "I feel more comfortable (on the outside) because it's what I used to play when I was at Miami, and I was familiar with it coming out of Syracuse. The gaps are defined, and I'm able to run faster. I haven't had to make a large adjustment. The adjustment has been to the different calls and the difference up front. Any time you go into a new system, some adjustments will have to be made." Head coach Gary Kubiak thought he struggled at first, but noted that he has gotten better everyday.

FOXSports.com reports Houston Texans rookie LB DeMeco Ryans is currently playing behind LB Morlon Greenwood at outside linebacker and LB Wali Rainer in the middle. He is making big strides at both positions, however, and will be pushing for the starting jobs in training camp. "We think he has a bright, bright future," defensive coordinator Richard Smith said. "And he's a young person that we feel can come in here and compete for a starting position on this team. But he's got to earn that spot. And that's what we're trying to get accomplished right now. We're trying to develop him into a starter. He brings youth, speed, and athletic ability to the position."

Ryans is as poised as a veteran linebacker when receiving calls from defensive coordinator Richard Smith and relaying them to his teammates during practice. Head coach Gary Kubiak said, "He's been able to handle a lot of things on the defensive side. He's a fine football player; we know that. But his intelligence is going to help him play very quickly." Ryans is currently sitting behind LB Morlon Greenwood at outside linebacker and LB Wali Rainer at middle linebacker.

The Houston Chronicle reports Houston Texans head coach Dom Capers likes what he sees from the inside linebacker positions in the 3-4 defense. Houston has two new starters for 2005 - LBs Morlon Greenwood and Kailee Wong - manning the starting inside spots. "I really like what I see of those two guys," said Capers. "First of all, they're real pros. They know how to prepare. Both are extremely hard workers. They do a great job in the classroom, and they're smart. And they're tough guys, too." Capers added that Greenwood is one of the team's quickest linebackers, while Wong's experience as an inside linebacker with the Minnesota Vikings allows him to be the "quarterback" of the defense. "I feel very comfortable with him making the calls," Capers said of Wong.

Greenwood will earn salaries of $540,000 (for 2005), $2.56 million (2006), $3.4 million (2007), $4 million (2008) and $5 million (2009). "I'm making a lot more tackles in the middle and getting to the ball a lot more than when I play on the outside," Greenwood said. "The way our defense is set up, the weak-side and strong-side linebackers take on the backs and most of the blockers freeing up the middle-backer to ball hunt.
