Bob Sherwin, of The New York Times, reports San Francisco 49ers OL Thomas Herrion, who died Saturday, Aug. 20, in the locker room after his team's game in Denver, had a family history of heart ailments, but medical experts could not definitively say those problems contributed to his death. Herrion's father, J. C. Herrion, died early last year from a stroke complicated by diabetes. He was 52. His mother, Janice, has had high blood pressure. Dr. Robert Eckel, president of the American Heart Association, said the major cause of sudden death in young people was "an underlining undiagnosed cardiac abnormality ... an inherited defect that is not always detected." Herrion's oldest brother, Love Savior, 32, said he was told the autopsy showed just regular things. "There was a little blockage of one artery but not a lot," Savior said. "And there was some slight stretching of the heart. But that was about it. We're trying to figure out why it happened."

Andrew Mason, of DenverBroncos.com, reports as the Denver Broncos returned to practice for the first time since Saturday's, Aug. 20, preseason win over the San Francisco 49ers, most of the players thoughts were with 49ers OL Thomas Herrion, who died shortly after collapsing the 49ers' locker room after the game. "It's just hard to deal with," said OL Tyson Clabo, who played with Herrion in NFL Europe. "I didn't get to talk to (Thomas). I guess I hurt myself a little bit and so after the game I just took it on (into the locker room). If I could do it over again, I'd have limped out there and saw how he was doing and talked to him. It's just kind of unbelievable."

Eddie Pells, of the Associated Press, reports an autopsy conducted Sunday, Aug. 21, failed to uncover the cause of death of San Francisco 49ers OL Thomas Herrion. Toxicology tests will now be performed to help determine the cause of death. Howard Daniel, an investigator with the Denver coroner's office that performed an autopsy on Herrion, said nothing was readily apparent about why he died. "There's no conclusion, pending further studies," Daniel said.
