Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports unrestricted free agent LB Scott Galyon (Miami) told Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt he plans to retire from the NFL after playing seven years. Galyon, 29, is having trouble with his injured left knee.

Todd Archer, of the Palm Beach Post, reports for The Sporting News that the Miami Dolphins likely will spend at least one mid-round pick on a linebacker after releasing backup Twan Russell and watching backup Scott Galyon test the market as an unrestricted free agent. The club also would like competition for WLB Derrick Rodgers.

The Sun Sentinel reports Miami Dolphins LB Scott Galyon (broken thumb) is expected to undergo surgery Friday. Galyon is expected to miss at least six weeks, although coach Dave Wannstedt is optimistic that he can play with a cast. The coach also added he expects to keep Galyon on the active roster.

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun Sentinel the Miami Dolphins may possibly expose DT Tim Bowens in the upcoming NFL expansion draft. The Dolphins must submit their list to the NFL by Tuesday; the draft is February 18. The team wants to hang on to Bowens, so they would hope the Houston Texans see him as too expensive. He is slated to make $8 million in 2002. One Dolphin confirmed in the expansion draft is RB J.J. Johnson. Other strong contenders for the expansion list are: TE Hunter Goodwin, G Heath Irwin, LB Scott Galyon and S Brock Marion.

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun Sentinel the Miami Dolphins have five players due roster bonuses in early March: FS Brock Marion ($2 million), DT Tim Bowens ($1 million), TE Hunter Goodwin ($550,000), S Shawn Wooden ($150,000) and LB Scott Galyon ($100,000). Due to the high base salaries for Bowens ($7 million) and Marion ($2 million) next season, the Dolphins likely will ask both players to restructure their contracts or get released. Goodwin, Wooden and Galyon may be released or they could be exposed in next month's expansion draft for the Houston Texans.

Bob Emanuel Jr. reports for the Miami Herald LB Scott Galyon is ready to step in for the injured Derrick Rodgers at OLB for the Miami Dolphins. Rodgers (shoulder) is lost for the season. "Rodgers plays with a lot of emotion and a lot of fire," Galyon said. At the time he was injured, Rodgers was third on the team with 82 tackles. Galyon, who has played in all 14 games this season, has three tackles. Galyon seems ready for the challenge of being the team's new starter on the weak-side. Sunday's game against Atlanta will be his second start with the Dolphins. "This is my chance to step up and play," said Galyon.

DT Daryl Gardener strained his neck, WR Chris Chambers suffered a right rib contusion and LB Scott Galyon injured his right wrist.

Jason Cole reports for the Miami Herald the injury news on rookie LB Morlon Greenwood became worse today as he is now expected to miss six weeks of action. Greenwood suffered a severe sprain on the middle of his left foot during practice July 28. TE Hunter Goodwin (sore knee) and OL Todd Wade (sprained ankle) and Mark Dixon (sore back) are also not expected to play Monday night in the Dolphins pre-season opener with the Rams. With Greenwood out, Twan Russell and Scott Galyon are expected to compete for the starting job at OLB.

The Sun-Sentinel reports, as expected, Miami Dolphins LB Scott Galyon returned to practice Tuesday for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery in May. The team also received confirmation the diagnosis of a sprained left foot for rookie LB Morlon Greenwood was accurate and he has no broken bones. Rookie CB Jamar Fletcher missed another practice Tuesday with a sore hamstring. DE Lorenzo Bromell was scheduled to see a doctor Tuesday to determine the source of his recent stomach problems. TE Hunter Goodwin has a bone bruise on his left knee as well as bone bleeding and a slightly strained MCL. He said the problems are not serious.

Coach Dave Wannstedt said if Greenwood misses three weeks it does not mean he will lose his chance to earn a berth as a starting linebacker. Greenwood’s absence will create extra practice time for Scott Galyon, who is scheduled to practice Tuesday for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery in May.

Mixon said he plans to play at his current weight of 265. LB Scott Galyon (ACL, right knee) said he's having problems with his left knee, which required extensive surgery in 1998. QB Jay Fiedler (shoulder) participated in seven-on-seven and individual drills. Rookie first-round draft pick CB Jamar Fletcher was sidelined early in his first practice after reinjuring his right quadriceps. WR O.J. McDuffie (toe), as expected, did not practice on Friday.

According to the Sun Sentinel, Miami Dolphins VP of player personnel Rick Spielman said the team wants to re-sign OT Richmond Webb. "We’d love to have Richmond finish his career as a Dolphin," Spielman said. Spielman added LB Robert Jones, who earlier refused a paycut and was released, would probably not be back with the team. If the season started today, Scott Galyon would probably have Jones' job. CB Terrance Shaw may be gone too because he wants to be a starter and he won't be one with the Dolphins.

The Bergen Record is reporting that the Giants have have decided not to pursue LB Dixon Edwards and they have decided to stick with Marcus Buckley. They feel that Buckley's ability to play the run and the pass makes him the better player. This in important because LBs Scott Galyon and Pete Monty are coming back from injuries.

The Bergen Record reports the New York Giants also worked out LBs Elijah Alexander, Steve Morrison and Terry Irving. With backup LBs Scott Galyon and Pete Monty coming off of surgery, the team is meeting with many LBs for backup purposes. Their primary interest remains in LB Dixon Edwards.
