NFL | Gardener Likely to Retire

Jody Foldesy, of the Washington Times, reports free agent DT Daryl Gardener (Broncos) is almost certain to retire in the coming months due to a degenerative condition in his back, according to a source familiar with the situation. The source said Gardener's back flared up in late May, shortly before he was released by the Broncos and agreed to terms with the Cincinnati Bengals. Gardener had an MRI in Miami, and was advised to stop playing football by spine specialist Dr. Gary Gieseke. Gardener could jeopardize his ability to walk if he continues to play. The source also said a Bengals team doctor concurred with Gieseke's recommendation. Gardener has yet to file retirement papers with the NFL but is expected to do so.

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports while the Cincinnati Bengals and DT Daryl Gardener had worked out a four-year deal in principle previously, Gardener's chronic back issues have sidelined the deal for the time being and probably for good.

Lee Rasizer, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports the Denver Broncos will save $2.1 million in salary cap room this season with the release of DT Daryl Gardener. The remainder of Gardener's $5 million contract will count $3.57 million in "dead money" in 2005.

Mark Curnette, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals DT Tony Williams is angered about the Bengals' possible acquisition of free agent DT Daryl Gardener (Broncos). Williams will be the player replaced in the lineup if Gardener signs and wins the job. "It (expletives deleted) me off," Williams said Wednesday, June 9. "They have to build for the future, I guess. Obviously they want to go in a different direction. I could see right away, actually, that I'm not going to be around (after the 2004 season). It's the business. The organization has to worry about their future." Williams has one year remaining on his contract and is due to make a base salary of $2.2 million in 2004.

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals' officials met with free agent DT Daryl Gardener and his agent, Neil Schwartz, Tuesday, June 8, but a deal was not finalized before the defensive tackle left Cincinnati. However, Schwartz said the two sides are just waiting to "make sure the T's are crossed and the I's are dotted." Schwartz also added Gardener "wants to play for Coach (Marvin) Lewis," and that his client "loved the visit."

Updating previous reports, Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, reports the Cincinnati Bengals are very excited about the prospects of adding DL Daryl Gardener once he is officially released from the Denver Broncos after June 1. "If he comes here, he'll make our team much better," DL Carl Powell said. "Oh my God, just his presence. Just by how big he is and how he runs to the ball and works so hard in the weight room. He doesn't take the little things for granted. I loved playing with him. He'll be in here at 5:30 a.m. ready and lathered. He brings a lot of tenacity to the game." Gardener and the Bengals have already agreed to a four-year, $9.3 million contract, which will be signed once his release becomes official.

Kevin Goheen, of the Cincinnati Post, reports the Cincinnati Bengals will have some salary cap shuffling to do if they sign DT Daryl Gardener, who will be released by the Denver Broncos after June 1. The Bengals and Gardener agreed to a four-year, $9.3 million deal back in April, but the deal cannot become official until after June 1. Cincinnati has more than $5 million in salary cap space available but that doesn't include the $4 million they have allocated to sign their 11 draft choices.

The Denver Post reports the Denver Broncos have promised to release DT Daryl Gardener on June 2, but has granted him permission to shop for a new team now as if he already were a free agent. The Broncos received a rebate of some portion of the $3 million signing bonus they paid Gardener a year ago, but neither Gardener nor the Broncos would disclose how they settled their differences or how much money each side received.

The Rocky Mountain News reports Denver Broncos DT Daryl Gardener will testify at his arbitration hearing Wednesday, March 10. Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan, general manager Ted Sundquist and Gardener's agent, Neil Schwartz, also are expected to testify. The Broncos allege Gardener violated the terms of his contract by engaging in conduct that was detrimental to the team. Denver has withheld the remaining $2 million of Gardener's signing bonus and are trying to recoup the $3 million already paid to him. The arbitrator also will decide whether the Broncos' decision to suspend Gardener twice three games in all last year was unfair.

Updating previous reports, ESPN.com reports the Denver Broncos have suspended DT Daryl Gardener (suspension) for two more games after going on a tirade about Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan on a local radio program last weekend. Gardener was originally suspended Nov. 20 for conduct detrimental to the team, a suspension that forced him to sit out Week 12. The big defensive tackle will now miss the Sunday, Nov. 30, game against the Oakland Raiders as well as the Dec. 7 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Lynn DeBruin, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports Denver Broncos DT Daryl Gardener, who was suspended for the Week 12 game against the Chicago Bears for conduct detrimental to the team, went on a tirade on radio belittling head coach Mike Shanahan and stating the team couldn't win a Super Bowl this year without him. Gardener referred to Shanahan as "the little man up there" and said the suspension was a "b---- a-- power move." He admitted his future in Denver "doesn't look too good," and claimed, "It's looking like this man (Shanahan) does not want me to be a Denver Bronco."

Andrew Mason, of DenverBroncos.com, reports Denver Broncos DT Daryl Gardener (wrist) made his first start as a Bronco Sunday, Oct. 26, against the Baltimore Ravens, after coming off the bench in the team's last two games. "I thought he (Gardener) played pretty good for his first game (as a starter)," Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said. "He played a lot of plays; he'll get better and better as time goes on." Shanahan added that he still does not believe Gardener's wrist is 100 percent healed.

Gardener was released from the hospital Monday, Oct. 6, after spending the weekend there. Gardener, even if healthy enough to play, has lost valuable conditioning because of injury and illness. He has yet to be active for a game.
