Tue, 06 Jul 2004 09:16:54 -0700 Jody Foldesy, of the Washington Times, reports free agent DT Daryl Gardener (Broncos) is almost certain to retire in the coming months due to a degenerative condition in his back, according to a source familiar with the situation. The source said Gardener's back flared up in late May, shortly before he was released by the Broncos and agreed to terms with the Cincinnati Bengals. Gardener had an MRI in Miami, and was advised to stop playing football by spine specialist Dr. Gary Gieseke. Gardener could jeopardize his ability to walk if he continues to play. The source also said a Bengals team doctor concurred with Gieseke's recommendation. Gardener has yet to file retirement papers with the NFL but is expected to do so.

Thu, 10 Jun 2004 10:16:13 -0700 Mark Curnette, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals DT Tony Williams is angered about the Bengals' possible acquisition of free agent DT Daryl Gardener (Broncos). Williams will be the player replaced in the lineup if Gardener signs and wins the job. "It (expletives deleted) me off," Williams said Wednesday, June 9. "They have to build for the future, I guess. Obviously they want to go in a different direction. I could see right away, actually, that I'm not going to be around (after the 2004 season). It's the business. The organization has to worry about their future." Williams has one year remaining on his contract and is due to make a base salary of $2.2 million in 2004.

However, Schwartz said the two sides are just waiting to "make sure the T's are crossed and the I's are dotted." Schwartz also added Gardener "wants to play for Coach (Marvin) Lewis," and that his client "loved the visit."

"If he comes here, he'll make our team much better," DL Carl Powell said. "Oh my God, just his presence. Just by how big he is and how he runs to the ball and works so hard in the weight room. He doesn't take the little things for granted. I loved playing with him. He'll be in here at 5:30 a.m. ready and lathered. He brings a lot of tenacity to the game." Gardener and the Bengals have already agreed to a four-year, $9.3 million contract, which will be signed once his release becomes official.
Tue, 01 Jun 2004 09:18:28 -0700 Kevin Goheen, of the Cincinnati Post, reports the Cincinnati Bengals will have some salary cap shuffling to do if they sign DT Daryl Gardener, who will be released by the Denver Broncos after June 1. The Bengals and Gardener agreed to a four-year, $9.3 million deal back in April, but the deal cannot become official until after June 1. Cincinnati has more than $5 million in salary cap space available but that doesn't include the $4 million they have allocated to sign their 11 draft choices.
