Patriots | Analyst critical of Wes Welker

Wed, 25 Apr 2012 05:50:07 -0700

NFL Network analyst Willie McGinest is critical of New England Patriots franchise free-agent WR Wes Welker's decision to potentially skip the team's mandatory June minicamp. "I just don't like the diva attitude," McGinest said. "Let's keep it real. Prior to the Patriots, this is a guy who played three years, had 96 receptions, never had a 1,000-yard season ... This $9 million-plus that they're offering is half of his last contract. That's a lot of money. Let's not forget that they signed Brandon Lloyd, they signed (WR Anthony Gonzalez), they signed (WR Deion) Branch back, they got the two tight ends; they have weapons on that offense. So look, Wes, it's time to take off the leopard-printed cowboy boots, get off the party tour and get back to work."

Patriots | Wes Welker may be franchise tagged soon

Fri, 02 Mar 2012 11:01:33 -0800

It isn't clear how much negotiation has happened recently between the New England Patriots and unrestricted free-agent WR Wes Welker. The Patriots may still use their franchise tag on Welker by Monday, March 5. The Patriots and Welker's agent, David Dunn, have worked on a deal since last fall that would work out for both parties.

Welker, who will be 31 this year, was given an $18 million, five-year deal in 2007 and has caught 554 passes for 6,105 yards and 31 touchdowns since joining the Patriots. No receiver has been as productive as Welker over the past five seasons, and the Patriots have had a bargain compared to production versus cost.

While the Patriots love Welker and want him to be around for a long time to come, it is unlikely that he would see a deal that comes anywhere close to approaching the $50 million in guaranteed money that Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald received.

"We at Pawngo thought Boston fans deserved a little something in return for their heartbreaking loss in the form of a great candy!" Pawngo CEO Todd Hillis said. Patriots | Future of Wes Welker a top priority

Tue, 07 Feb 2012 09:08:45 -0800

A decision on the future of New England Patriots impending free-agent WR Wes Welker will be the biggest offseason issue facing the team. Owner Robert Kraft has publicly stated he wants Welker to remain a Patriot. When it comes to negotiations, the Patriots have the upper hand on Welker because they can use the franchise tag on him. The assumption is they would apply the tag, which would lock Welker up for next year at $9.4 million. However, the team could potentially hold back on the tag and see what Welker commands on the open market. New England may be willing to gamble he'd get less on a long-term deal. Then, they'd use that to work out something at a much friendlier cost than the tag rate.

There were a lot of things out there that didn't go the way we wanted."

Patriots | Wes Welker feels he let team down

Sun, 05 Feb 2012 23:56:43 -0800

New England Patriots WR Wes Welker said he let the team down dropping a key third-down pass in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI. "It's a play I never drop. I always make it. And in the most critical situation, I let the team down," Welker said following the game.

Welker led the NFL with 122 receptions during the regular season and caught the first seven passes thrown to him during the Super Bowl. The eighth pass was the critical drop, as it went off his hands with less than four minutes to play. The drop led to the Patriots punting to the New York Giants, who would march down the field for the go-ahead touchdown.

In Welker's defense, it was a tough play, as he had to twist midair to adjust to the pass. "The ball is right there. It's one I'll have to live with," Welker said.

"We just couldn't connect. I'll keep throwing the ball to him for as long as I possibly can," Brady said of Welker.
