Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports with the release of DE Al Wallace, the Carolina Panthers will save $1.1 million in salary cap room. The club still needs to clear about $1.4 million before the start of free agency March 2.

Panthers | Wallace fined $7,500 for hit

ESPN.com reports Carolina Panthers DL Al Wallace has been fined $7,500 for his slam of Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Chris Simms (spleen) during the Week 3 game. The Buccaneers believe the hit might have helped cause Simms' spleen to rupture, but the team does not have any proof to back up their claim. The NFL said Wallace violated a rule that states players cannot "unnecessarily or violently throw a [quarterback] down and land on top of him with all the defender's weight."

Carolina Panthers DE Julius Peppers (shoulder) is being further evaluated so the extent of his shoulder injury remains undetermined. The team will have a better idea of his availability against the Seattle Seahawks before practice Wednesday, Jan. 18. Peppers has indicated he plans to play against the Seahawks. If he is unable to, it could lead to more playing time for backup DEs Al Wallace and Kemp Rasmussen.

Wallace would like to return to the Panthers, but his agent, Jerrold Colton, said he may get a more enticing offer from another team.

Carolina Panthers DE Kemp Rasmussen has helped his stock with his play on special teams. Rasmussen led the Panthers in special teams tackles and that could lead to more playing time on the defensive line next year. Top backup DE Al Wallace will be an unrestricted free agent and Rasmussen could compete for that job if Wallace leaves.

With Carolina Panthers DE Kavika Pittman out for the season, it's likely the Panthers will scale back its defensive line rotation. Pittman and DE Al Wallace had been rotating in together to rest starting DEs Julius Peppers and Mike Rucker. Although DE Kemp Rasmussen also plays defensive end, he's more of a special teams player. That means it's likely Wallace will be the only end rotating in and the team will rest Peppers and Rucker separately.

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun-Sentinel in addition to the previously reported workouts for DEs Al Wallace and Derrick Ham and CB Jerry Wilson, the Miami Dolphins had workouts for four other players on Wednesday. The four were: CBs Donny Brady and Fahkir Brown along with DEs David Bowens and Jeff Posey. There are no guarantees any of the seven will be signed. One or two, however, could be signed as early as today.

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun-Sentinel the Miami Dophins will hold workouts today for defensive linemen and defensive backs to fill the two vacant roster spots. Among the players scheduled to participate are: DB Jerry Wilson, and DL Al Wallace and DE Derrick Ham.
