Falcons | Smith Note

Sun, 19 May 2002 08:17:30 -0700

Charles Odum reports for the Sporting News concerns over the health of RB Maurice Smith helped push the Atlanta Falcons into drafting RB T.J. Duckett in the first round of the NFL Draft. Coach Dan Reeves was concerned about the RB position after finding out Smith's post season surgery was worse than expected. Scheduled for a routine arthroscopic procedure, Smith's surgery became more serious when doctors instead had to repair torn cartilage. Smith is back working out, but Reeves wanted more insurance than a RB coming off knee surgery behind RB Warrick Dunn, thus the Duckett selection.

Falcons | Smith Update

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Atlanta Falcons RB Maurice Smith's rehabilitation might have played a role in the team selecting RB T.J. Duckett in the NFL Draft. Falcons | Expensive, Crowded Backfield

Sat, 20 Apr 2002 19:40:48 -0700

Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the drafting of Michigan State RB T.J. Duckett gave the Atlanta Falcons a rather expensive and crowded backfield. Duckett joins Warrick Dunn, Jamal Anderson and possibly Maurice Smith. If Anderson is retained, the Falcons could have over $13 million invested in three RBs in 2002. Coach Dan Reeves feels you "can never have enough running backs." Reeves now has more than enough backs, although the suspicion has to be that the Falcons don't feel Anderson will make it back from his second knee surgery in three years. Anderson allowed that he was "stunned" by the move. "I guess nothing surprises me anymore," said Anderson. "Maybe the handwriting is on the wall."

Falcons | Shocker: Duckett Selected

Sat, 20 Apr 2002 12:52:23 -0700

Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Reeves said the team didn't come into the draft aiming to take a running back but could not pass up Michigan State RB T.J. Duckett when he was still available at No. 19 overall. "We felt he was a guy we couldn't pass up," Reeves said. "He's a heck of a running back." Reeves noted the team is uncertain of the future of RBs Jamal Anderson and Maurice Smith, who are both coming off of knee surgeries. Duckett's addition could spell the end of Anderson's career with the Falcons. For some of the most up-to-date draft coverage, go to KFFL's NFL Draft Central! [ NFL Draft Central ]

Falcons | Anderson Update

Sun, 03 Mar 2002 12:41:27 -0800

Charles Odum reports for the Sporting News Atlanta Falcons RB Jamal Anderson said he is further ahead with his recovery from his ACL injury this time then he was the first time he suffered the same injury. Anderson says he will be ready to participate in this month's off-season program and passing camp in June. Anderson probably won't be able to withstand the same workload he did before his most recent injury, but he and RB Maurice Smith give the Falcons two good running backs and they are expected to add another RB in the NFL Draft.

Falcons | RB Notes

Sun, 10 Feb 2002 18:31:43 -0800

Charles Odum reports for the Sporting News new Atlanta Falcons RBs coach Ollie Wilson was the position coach in Atlanta when they had three 1,000 rushers: Erric Pegram in 1993, Craig Heyward in his 1995 Pro Bowl season, and Jamal Anderson in 1996. RB Maurice Smith will have arthroscopic surgery to clean out his right knee. Smith played through the knee injury and other ailments last season, but while playing at less that full speed his production suffered. The Falcons have needs elsewhere but might use their first-round draft pick to draft a RB, even if both Anderson and Smith return in 2002.

Falcons | RB Notes

Thu, 27 Dec 2001 13:26:46 -0800

Charles Odum reports for the Sporting News Atlanta Falcons RB Rodney Thomas is expected to continue to see an extended amount of action over the team's last two games. Starting RB Maurice Smith has been slowed for several weeks by a sprained ankle, and he will need off-season surgery to repair torn cartilage in his knee. Unless FB Bob Christian starts in a one-back set, Smith should be the starting RB again. Thomas' speed also produced quick bursts that allowed him to create extra yards against the Bills last week and the offense needs the threat of the long run.
