The Associated Press reports sprinter John Capel has accepted a two-year suspension after testing positive for marijuana, the U. S. Anti-Doping Agency said. Capel, a former wide receiver, was selected by the Chicago Bears in 2001 but tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine. The Bears dropped him after he was charged with marijuana possession.

The Kansas City Star reports that Kansas City Chiefs WRs Johnnie Morton and Eddie Kennison will be starters for next season. WR Marvin Minnis is likely to occupy the No. 3 spot. The fourth receiver spot is up for grabs between Marc Boerigter, John Capel, Dante Hall, Curtis Jackson, Reggie Jones and Sylvester Morris.

The Kansas City Star reports the Kansas City Chiefs are planning to meet with WR John Capel on Wednesday. He was drafted by the Bears but then released before he signed a contract. "If he can pass the physical, I think we'll sign him," coach Dick Vermeil said. "We needed another young receiver with the loss of (Sylvester Morris) in terms of numbers at training camp."

The Chicago Sun Times reports agent Robert Alterman, who represents rookie WR John Capel, was surprised when the Chicago Bears relinquished their rights to his client on Friday. Alterman said he had just talked to the team about starting contract talks for Capel. He expects Capel to land elsewhere. "I had no preliminary warning. I am sure he will be picked up by another NFL team quickly. He's the fastest player in the NFL and with a little work he is going to make some team very happy. The Chicago Bears made a mistake."

Capel has upset the team during the off-season. First, he tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine, then he was picked up on a traffic charge where police allegedly found marijuana in his car and finally, he didn't show up for a portion of the symposium that the league puts on for all rookies.

SportsLine.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Chicago Bears rookie WR John Capel, a seventh-round draft choice, was arrested three weeks ago and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Fewer than 20 grams of marijuana were found when his car was searched on May 5. It is believed to be the first such arrest for Capel, who tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine earlier this year. He's likely to enter the NFL as at least a "Phase One" offender in the league's substance abuse policy.

Capel only caught 11 passes in two years at Florida but is hoping to catch on with the Bears. The Kansas City Star reports the Kansas City Chiefs turned their focus for a speed WR and kick-return specialist to Rams restricted free agent WR/KR Tony Horne on Tuesday. If the Chiefs want to sign him to an offer sheet, they must do so by Monday. If he is signed and the Rams don't match, there is no compensation. In other news, Florida WR John Capel, an Olympic sprinter, is expected to visit with the Chiefs this week. He hasn't played football since the 1999 season. He sat out last season to concentrate on the Olympics. The Chiefs will entertain two other free agents this week, both special team-type players, S Larry Whigham (Patriots) and CB Taje Allen (Rams).
