Falcons | Anderson Situation Needs to be Addressed

Sat, 20 Apr 2002 23:20:55 -0700

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Atlanta Falcons RB Jamal Anderson appears to see the writing on the wall following the selection of T.J. Duckett on Saturday. He said it appears it doesn't look good for him in Atlanta during a phone interview with ESPN. Head coach Dan Reeves said it's a situation that will need to be addressed. Cutting or trading Anderson before June 1 would save the team only about $200,000 against the cap. If they release him after June 1, the team would save around $1.7 million in cap space. He'd still count $1.5 million against the cap this year and $1.5 against the cap in 2003.

Sat, 20 Apr 2002 23:19:30 -0700

Falcons | Expensive, Crowded Backfield

Sat, 20 Apr 2002 19:40:48 -0700

Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the drafting of Michigan State RB T.J. Duckett gave the Atlanta Falcons a rather expensive and crowded backfield. Duckett joins Warrick Dunn, Jamal Anderson and possibly Maurice Smith. If Anderson is retained, the Falcons could have over $13 million invested in three RBs in 2002. Coach Dan Reeves feels you "can never have enough running backs." Reeves now has more than enough backs, although the suspicion has to be that the Falcons don't feel Anderson will make it back from his second knee surgery in three years. Anderson allowed that he was "stunned" by the move. "I guess nothing surprises me anymore," said Anderson. "Maybe the handwriting is on the wall."

Duckett when he was still available at No. 19 overall. "We felt he was a guy we couldn't pass up," Reeves said. "He's a heck of a running back." Reeves noted the team is uncertain of the future of RBs Jamal Anderson and Maurice Smith, who are both coming off of knee surgeries. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Reeves wants to see how well RB Jamal Anderson responds from his knee injury before he fully decides Anderson's role for 2002. "Everyone says, 'What are you going to do with Jamal?' " Reeves said. "First of all, we've got to see whether Jamal is going to be healthy. Having gone through [knee surgeries] myself, you lose a lot of the natural things Jamal has been able to do in the past. You lose some ability to make people miss, and drive and push the pile."
