The deal includes an $11 million club option for the 2014 season with a $1.5 million buyout. Young is scheduled to make $406,000 this season and will receive a $1 million signing bonus. The extension calls for Young to make base salaries of $1.75 million (2009), $3.25 million (2010), $5 million (2011), $7 million (2012) and $8.5 million (2013).

Young has reportedly agreed to a five-year contract extension that will keep him under contract with the Diamondbacks through the 2013 season. The deal buys out all of Young's years of arbitration and adds a club option for his first eligible year for free agency. The deal is expected to be similar to the six-year, $31 million deal Colorado Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki signed this offseason. The Diamondbacks are expected to announce the deal Tuesday, April 8.

"We really don't have a prototypical leadoff guy; we really don't have a prototypical No. 4 guy," said manager Bob Melvin. "We've got lots of guys that we feel like are 2, 3, 5, 6 guys. . . . If those are our biggest problems, then we can figure a way out to do something at least day to day on lineups. It doesn't have to be a set lineup every day." One possibility is OF Chris B. Young, who has averaged almost 30 stolen bases during his past few minor league seasons. Also getting consideration will be 2B Orlando Hudson, SS Stephen Drew and OF Eric Byrnes.
