There are plenty of other attractive shortstop options than Pennington. He might be good for a few stolen bases, but his bat is nothing special at all.

Wed, 12 Dec 2012 11:43:06 -0800 Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said SS Didi Gregorius will compete with SSs Willie Bloomquist and Cliff Pennington for the job at shortstop in spring training. "If he had to go back to Triple-A, I don't think it's such a bad thing. I think Triple-A at-bats would be good for him. Fortunately, we're in a situation where we've got depth at that area. Long term, having a guy like him and (Triple-A shortstop) Chris Owings, we've got two, I think industry-wide, two of the best young middle infielders in the game," Towers said about Gregorius. One talent evaluator said Gregorius could play in the big leagues right away.
Mon, 22 Oct 2012 11:00:52 -0700 Arizona Diamondbacks SS Cliff Pennington could become the team's everyday shortstop, according to general manager Kevin Towers. Pennington also provides depth at second base behind 2B Aaron Hill. SSs Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald are other options at shortstop.
Thu, 04 Oct 2012 18:59:30 -0700 Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said he does not believe INF Willie Bloomquist or SS John McDonald can be the team's everyday shortstop next season.
