San Diego Padres SPs Tyson Ross, James Shields and Andrew Cashner are penciled in the starting rotation. SPs Brandon Maurer, Colin Rea, Robbie Erlin, Carlos Villanueva and Drew Pomeranz will compete for the final two spots this spring. SP Brandon Morrow could also be in the mix.
Fantasy Tip: Maurer probably present the most upside of the group because of his strikeout abilities, but how well will he transition from reliever to starter? Pomeranz also presents some intriguing upside if he wins a job, but he may be better off in relief, as well. Stay tuned for who wins these final jobs. They could both certainly be worth a late-round flier in deep mixed formats.

The San Diego Padres plan to consider P Carlos Villanueva for a job in the starting rotation during spring training, according to general manager A.J. Preller.
Fantasy Tip: Although Villanueva is no stranger to starting games, he has not done so since 2014 and has experienced more success in a middle relief role. The 32-year-old right-hander is 18-33 with a 5.00 ERA in 76 career starts and should be viewed as nothing more than a late-round flier in NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues if he cracks the rotation.

The San Diego Padres are believed to still have interest in free-agent RP Fernando Rodney (Cubs), even after signing free-agent RP Carlos Villanueva (Cardinals) to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million.
Fantasy Tip: The Padres may offer Rodney the opportunity to serve as their closer, which could give them a leg up over the Cubs in the competition to sign him. He went 7-5 with a 4.74 ERA in 68 combined games for Seattle and San Diego in 2015, with 16 saves for the Mariners before he was removed from the ninth-inning role in favor of RP Carson Smith. Despite his struggles last season, Rodney could be worth drafting in the later rounds of mixed fantasy leagues if he will receive a shot to close.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Carlos Villanueva is in the discussion for a start next week when the spot taken by SP Tim Cooney comes around.
Fantasy Tip: Cooney was lit up in his major league debut and is probably headed back to Triple-A Memphis. Villanueva could be awarded a start after bailing the team out a couple of times in long relief. The team could also turn to Tyler Lyons. Villanueva has been pretty shaky in a starting role the last couple of years, but he has a 0.96 ERA and a 0.54 WHIP in 9 1/3 innings thus far. He could be a matchup play on FantasyScore.
