Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria said the team doesn't expect SP Jake Arrieta (shoulder) to be ready for the start of the season. RP Carlos Villanueva will be stretched out to bolster the starting pitching depth.
Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how many starts Arrieta would have to miss in the season's first month. Regardless, Villanueva or James McDonald would likely take his spot. Neither is worth investing heavily in in NL-only leagues, obviously.

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta will be recalled to start on Friday, Aug. 16. The team has moved P Carlos Villanueva back to the bullpen.
Fantasy Tip: Lefty Chris Rusin's performance reportedly played a role in the decision to move Villanueva, according to Cubs beat writer Mark D. Gonzales. Arrieta will probably get a chance to stick for the rest of the season and could be worth a pickup in NL-only leagues.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Tuesday, July 2, that SP Carlos Villanueva will be stretched out to get back into the rotation following the trade of SP Scott Feldman to the Baltimore Orioles. Villanueva posted a 1-3 record with a 3.93 ERA in eight starts earlier this season, but was bumped from the rotation once SP Matt Garza became healthy.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said SP Carlos Villanueva will be moving to the bullpen since SP Matt Garza (lat) is rejoining the starting rotation.

Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza (lat) logged six shutout innings Thursday, May 16, in a rehab start for Triple-A Iowa. He allowed two hits and struck out six while not allowing a walk. He's on schedule to join the big-league club sometime next week. When Garza comes back, P Carlos Villanueva looks like the most realistic rotation casualty. Though manager Dale Sveum hasn't shut down the idea of a six-man rotation, it's unlikely to happen in the long term.
Fantasy Tip: He'll probably have around two months to work back into form so the Cubs can showcase him for a possible late-July trade. Villanueva can be dropped in mixed leagues when Garza re-establishes his rotation spot. Scott Feldman has pitched relatively well lately, and Villanueva's past bullpen experience is actually working against his fantasy value here.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said the team may use a six-man rotation when SP Matt Garza (lat) returns to the team.
Fantasy Tip: Travis Wood, Scott Feldman and Carlos Villanueva have all been carrying their weight in the rotation, so Sveum might find it too hard to bump one of them to the bullpen to make room for Garza. Don't expect the six-man rotation to last for long, though, so those three might be competing to stay in the rotation in their next few starts.

Chicago Cubs SP Carlos Villanueva was expected to start Wednesday, April 17, against the Texas Rangers, but that game was postponed due to rain. Rather than skipping his turn, everyone has been pushed back a day. Villanueva will now start the series finale against the Texas Rangers Thursday, April 18, with SP Jeff Samardzija pushed back one day to Friday, April 19, for the series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Chicago Cubs SP Carlos Villanueva allowed three hits and a walk over 7 1/3 scoreless innings in a no-decision Friday, April 12, against the San Francisco Giants. He struck out three, as he lowered his ERA to 0.64.
Fantasy Tip: Villanueva has emerged as a must-start in all NL-only fantasy leagues, but he is still not someone who can be trusted in anything but the deepest of mixed formats.

Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza (lat, elbow) could begin the season on the disabled list depending on the results of his MRI exam. Both SPs Travis Wood and Carlos Villanueva could begin the year in the rotation as a result, with SP Scott Baker (elbow) also expected to start on the DL.
