"He's good," Wedge said. "He said it was pretty sore this morning, but he feels good, and (trainer Rick Griffin) felt he got him in a good place after the game last night. He's feeling good today, so we should be fine."

Hernandez lasted eight innings and appeared headed for a no-decision until C Jesus Montero hit a home run to put the Mariners ahead. Over his past five starts, Hernandez is 4-0 with a 0.71 ERA, 40 strikeouts and only three walks.

He tossed six shutout innings and became the third pitcher in team history to reach the 100-win mark. The others were SPs Jamie Moyer and Randy Johnson. Hernandez lowered his ERA to 2.08 and gave up five hits and struck out nine. Hernandez left with some tightness in his back, but the team removed him as a precaution.

"It's nice to see him get back out there and compete again," said pitching coach Carl Willis. "He felt great. I thought his fastball was good, his changeup was right there as it always is and he threw some good sliders as well. Most importantly, he felt good, so we'll see him again in five days." Hernandez's fastball was in the 91-92 mph range. He's expected to make four more spring training starts.

Also, SPs Jon Garland and Jeremy Bonderman are making good impressions early in spring. "They've both been very impressive," manager Eric Wedge said of Garland and Bonderman. "It's early in camp, and we have to see how they stand the test of wear and tear and going out there and pitching on a regular basis. But they're both going to get good opportunities to make this ballclub." Bonderman is weighing 220 pounds this spring, which is around 25 pounds less than he weighed when he played for the Detroit Tigers.

Cool, wet weather forced the session indoors, but he threw 33 pitches to bullpen C Jason Phillips for approximately 10 minutes with mostly fastballs and some changeups mixed in. "I was waiting for it for a long time," Hernandez said. "Now that I feel good, I'm going to just keep going out there like normal and go with my routine and prepare for games."
