Wed, 19 Jun 2013 07:05:12 -0700 Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) said before the game Monday, June 17, that his left knee was bothering him. He went 3-for-3 with a homer. The knee has been an issue all season, and he's on a game-by-game basis.
Mon, 17 Jun 2013 09:37:27 -0700 Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard hasn't hit a homer in his last 67 plate appearances and has just one in 130, with his last big fly coming on May 29. Manager Charlie Manuel said he has no plans to move Howard out of the cleanup spot. Howard is batting .289 (24-for-83) with 10 extra-base hits over his last 24 games and was 11-for-33 on the road trip that just ended. Fantasy Tip: Howard may very well start looking like the early-season version of himself soon, but how much his balky knee will let him take advantage of it remains to be seen. He's looked a bit healthier lately, though, and his extra-base knocks could start turning into dingers soon. What's his owner's asking price?
Wed, 12 Jun 2013 17:37:51 -0700 Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard has hit just one home run in his last 107 plate appearances entering play on Wednesday, June 12. Manager Charlie Manuel was asked if his recent struggles might be related to an ailing left knee and if he'd consider hitting someone else fourth. The questioning led to a somewhat heated exchange in which his frustrations became obvious. Manuel was asked if he was upset about the offense or the questions concerning it, and he replied, "A little of both, probably. We are inconsistent performance-wise. And when you've got that, it's hard. We won five games in a row, then we lose four. That's kind of how we've been playing." Fantasy Tip: Well then. Howard heated up briefly after he received a cortisone shot, but the knee is a problem he acknowledged he may have to deal with for the rest of the season. He may slowly round back into form, but that form may be of a 25- or 30-homer player, at best. The offense certainly misses Chase Utley, too.
Sat, 08 Jun 2013 13:33:54 -0700 Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the starting lineup against the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday, June 8.
Fri, 31 May 2013 09:49:22 -0700 Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) sat out due to a sore knee Thursday, May 30. The team was also facing a left-handed pitcher.
Tue, 21 May 2013 12:36:47 -0700 Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) is back in the lineup Tuesday, May 21, after the team was unsure if he had a tear in his meniscus.
Mon, 20 May 2013 16:41:21 -0700 The Philadelphia Phillies are a little concerned that 1B Ryan Howard's (knee) meniscus issues may be related to his Achilles' injury that he suffered in the playoffs back in 2011. "When you look at the meniscus, there's a little piece of it that we're concerned about," trainer Scott Sheridan said. "There's certain tests that make it look like he has a meniscus tear, and that's not as clear cut. If you did an MRI on all of it and you find these changes in the meniscus, the question is – is that what's really causing the symptoms?" Howard is hitting .245 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 41 games, and his .713 OPS is the lowest mark of his career. Fantasy Tip: Keep a close eye on how Howard progresses over the next several days. He's out tonight, and the team is listing him as day-to-day. These could very easily become a situation that lands the lefty slugger on the disabled list. In that event, Freddy Galvis would likely be a regular in the lineup at third base with Michael Young shifting across the diamond to first.
Mon, 20 May 2013 14:36:11 -0700 Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) was diagnosed with a change in the meniscus in his knee and inflammation Monday, May 20, and he's listed as day-to-day. He received an injection in his knee Sunday, May 19. Fantasy Tip: With Howard out Sunday, Michael Young shifted to first base and Freddy Galvis manned the hot corner. This is likely what the Phils will go with for however long Howard is out. Galvis will become an NL-only infield target if Howard needs to go on the disabled list.
Sun, 19 May 2013 20:28:50 -0700 Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) is dealing with a nagging left knee injury, and he will have an MRI Monday, May 20. While he will accompany the team to Miami, manager Charlie Manuel said he does not expect to play Howard Monday.
