He's also chasing more balls; his rate of 37 percent of swings at pitches outside the strike zone is up from 29 percent in 2010 and 2011. His batting average on balls in play is at a career low of .243. Holliday is hitting only .185 against fastballs this year, though.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday will be the team's No. 3 hitter in the absence of 1B Albert Pujols in 2012. He has hit .322 with 67 home runs, 243 RBIs and a .397 on-base percentage in his career in the three hole. "I'm really excited about putting him there. I've told people that I don't think St. Louis has seen the best of Matt Holliday yet. This guy is an amazingly talented player. I'm expecting great things from him this season," manager Mike Matheny said. OF Carlos Beltran, 3B David Freese and 1B Lance Berkman could rotate in the cleanup spot.
