Nationals | Dan Haren has solid outing

Fri, 03 May 2013 11:20:22 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Dan Haren gave up just one run and four hits (one home run) while striking out four and walking one in eight innings to beat the Atlanta Braves Thursday, May 2. He has given up three earned runs and 10 hits over 14 innings in his past two starts while striking out nine and walking only two, and he's allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last five starts. Haren entered his outing with a 7.31 career ERA at Turner Field. "I went with Wilson a lot. I like to throw first-pitch fastballs just to show them and throw it for a strike," Haren said. "He called a lot of first-pitch cutters. I think he was sensing that they were going to swing, so he was setting up out there. They're such an aggressive team, I was making 0-2 pitches earlier in the count."

Fantasy Tip: After a brutal start to the year, Haren has settled down in a bit. Much like Roy Halladay, Haren is working with a new set of limitations to his arsenal, most notably a diminished velocity. The key for Haren against the Braves was not overthrowing. He won't give you many K's these days, and his location will be the key to whether he gets hit hard on an outing-to-outing basis.

Nationals | Dan Haren battered

Tue, 26 Mar 2013 15:52:55 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Dan Haren gave up four home runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out three in six innings in his final spring start Tuesday, March 26. He let 10 straight batters reach at one point and was hitting 90 mph with his fastball. He finishes camp with a 6.39 ERA, 18 strikeouts and five walks in 25 1/3 frames. Haren wasn't discouraged by the way he pitched, though. "He found out which hitters he didn't want to come in on," manager Davey Johnson said, laughing. "He got his work. He finished up the spring in good shape. He'll be ready to go." One scout said Haren looked better than he did earlier this spring.

Nationals | Dan Haren's velocity down

Fri, 15 Mar 2013 14:49:49 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Dan Haren allowed five runs in four innings Friday, March 15, and lacked life on his fastball. He gave up two home runs in the first inning. "That was just one of those days, man." Haren said. "I felt like I was throwing a weighted ball out there. It was just bad, all the way around. As I went along it was a little bit better, but my first couple starts were far and away better than this. I just, I don't know if it's dead arm — or I don't even know what that is. I just didn't feel great." He has ranged from 88 to 91 mph with his fastball this spring but was clocked at 84-87 mph Friday. Haren felt worn down and said his body was achy.

Fantasy Tip: Back and hip issues were mostly to blame for Haren's uncharacteristic 2012, but his velocity was already on decline before that. This outing could very well be attributed to "dead arm," but with diminished velocity, Haren will have similar rough outings if he's unable to spot the ball where he wants to.

Nationals | Dan Haren, Jordan Zimmermann working on things

Thu, 21 Feb 2013 13:16:26 -0800

Washington Nationals SP Dan Haren said his main focus this spring is on developing his fastball and cutter on the right side of the plate. "A lot of my game is on the left side of the plate with cutters and fastballs," Haren said. "But toward the end of last season in September, I started doing some different things on the right side of the plate with my cutter and fastball and working them in together out there, and started having a lot of success. But it's still a work-in-progress." SP Jordan Zimmermann is focusing on his changeup and throwing it with confidence, and he said he didn't entirely trust the pitch last year.

Nationals | Dan Haren was overthrowing

Mon, 18 Feb 2013 16:18:42 -0800

Washington Nationals SP Dan Haren said he started overthrowing last year when he realized that he had lost some velocity on his pitches, which caused him to leave the ball up in the zone.

Nationals | Like what they see in Dan Haren

Fri, 15 Feb 2013 15:42:18 -0800

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson was impressed with SP Dan Haren's first bullpen session of the spring Friday, Feb. 15. Haren threw only sinkers and cutters during the session. Last year, he threw 40.1 percent sinkers and 35.6 percent cutters while mixing his splitter in 18.3 percent of the time. He used curveballs just six percent of the time. Haren wants to focus on pitching righties inside more.

Nationals | Dan Haren feeling healthy

Mon, 04 Feb 2013 14:41:29 -0800

Updating a previous report Washington Nationals SP Dan Haren (back, hip), who dealt with back and hip issues last season that led to diminished velocity, said he doesn't expect any problems this year, and he enters spring training fully healthy. "I feel great," Haren said at. "I threw a bullpen actually (on Jan. 25) before I flew out. I felt good, I feel strong. Just trying to put it in neutral a little bit. I've thrown three or four bullpens. I don't want to get ready too early, especially this year with spring starting a little earlier, games starting a little earlier." Haren has dealt with his lingering hip issues by losing weight, improving his flexibility and strengthening his core muscles.
