Mon, 17 Jun 2013 15:19:05 -0700 Arizona Diamondbacks RP J.J. Putz (elbow) said he felt good after a bullpen session Monday, June 17. His next step will be to go on a rehab assignment, which will start Friday, June 21. Fantasy Tip: It's unclear if Putz will be returned to closing duties when he's healthy. Until we know more, those that picked up Heath Bell will have to hang onto him. If you're in need of saves and Putz is available, stash him now.
Sat, 25 May 2013 16:33:19 -0700 Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said RP J.J. Putz (elbow) has been playing catch from 90 feet and doing strengthening exercises. The team is taking a cautious approach with Putz's rehab. Fantasy Tip: It is not known when Putz will be able to return to his closer role but it does not appear like he will be returning in the near future. Heath Bell likely will continue to close games until Putz is able to return.
Sat, 11 May 2013 12:33:56 -0700 Arizona Diamondbacks RP Heath Bell said he worked on improving his mechanics after he allowed four runs and 10 hits in his first five outings of the season. "I knew something was wrong, and I had no idea what it was," Bell said. "(The coaches) have helped me get my mechanics where they need to be. It's not really hard going back into the closer role because I've done that the last four years. But I just wanted to get mechanically back and start executing my pitches like I know I can."
Thu, 09 May 2013 15:51:05 -0700 Updating a previous report, Arizona Diamondbacks RP J.J. Putz (elbow) is dealing with an ulnar collateral ligament sprain in his elbow, and he won't need to undergo surgery. Putz will rest for now, according to manager Kirk Gibson. Fantasy Tip: This is comforting news for the D-backs' bullpen and Putz's fantasy owners. Still, he'll probably miss extended time, but you'll have to use him in your DL spot until he's ready. Heath Bell has first crack at the closing duties, and he was successful in his first chance last night. David Hernandez is worth owning in deep mixed leagues in case Bell falters.
Wed, 08 May 2013 16:55:37 -0700 Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said RP Heath Bell will receive the first chance to close out games with RP J.J. Putz (elbow) injured. Fantasy Tip: Target Bell immediately off the waiver wire. David Hernandez is a consolation prize, and he'll likely get a shot if Bell struggles. Matt Reynolds could enter the picture if both pitchers fail to get the job done.
Wed, 08 May 2013 16:50:53 -0700 Arizona Diamondbacks RP Heath Bell said he was told that he and RP David Hernandez will split the closer duties based on matchups with RP J.J. Putz (elbow) on the disabled list. Fantasy Tip: Bell is the best bet to receive the first closing opportunity or the majority of the save chances, at least initially, because of his extensive closing experience over Hernandez. Hernandez deserves to be owned, as well, because of this news. Matt Reynolds could fight his way into the mix if neither Bell nor Hernandez take advantage of their opportunities to save ballgames.
Wed, 08 May 2013 14:25:50 -0700 The Arizona Diamondbacks placed RP J.J. Putz (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain Wednesday, May 8, and recalled RP Will Harris from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Fantasy Tip: The Snakes indicated earlier in the day that Heath Bell would take over the closing duties with Putz sidelined. Bell should immediately be snatched up in all formats, but now we know he'll have at least two weeks' worth of save opportunities. Despite Bell's atrocious season with the Miami Marlins last year, he's pitched well of late and has 19 K's to only three walks on the season. David Hernandez will continue to set up in the eighth inning, but he might become a long-term factor in the ninth if Putz is out for an extended period. The fact that Hernandez was 0-for-3 in save chances (two in the eighth inning) this year might be the reason Kirk Gibson is going with Bell over him, at least for the time being. Bell's experience in the closer role gives him the edge, also.
Wed, 08 May 2013 11:28:55 -0700 Arizona Diamondbacks RP Heath Bell will fill in at closer while RP J.J. Putz (elbow) is sidelined. Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners are likely to be skeptical of the burly righty's ability to pitch well in the role and are probably wondering why David Hernandez isn't getting the nod. Bell should be picked up immediately, however. He's pitched well since his first three appearances of the season, for the most part, and he has 19 K's against just three walks in 13 1/3 frames. Arizona's bullpen has been heavily taxed in the early going. Hernandez may factor in if Putz's injury is a long-term issue. Matt Reynolds may as well, especially if matchups with left-handed batters become Kirk Gibson's concern. It's not clear if Putz is headed to the DL.
Fri, 03 May 2013 18:11:08 -0700 Arizona Diamondbacks RP J.J. Putz will continue to close, but his workload will be monitored, manager Kirk Gibson said Friday, May 3. RPs Heath Bell and David Hernandez might get save chances if the situation dictates.
Fri, 03 May 2013 16:40:04 -0700 Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said RP J.J. Putz will receive the save opportunity if one arises Friday, May 3. Fantasy Tip: Putz's struggles this season have been well-documented, but neither David Hernandez nor Heath Bell have taken advantage of this; both setup men have had struggles of their own. As a result, Gibson appears to be sticking with Putz, at least for the time being. Stash Hernandez or Bell, or both, if you're trying to poach saves.
