Yankees | CC Sabathia not sweating velocity drop

Fri, 12 Apr 2013 09:02:37 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia's fastball averaged 89.9 mph in his first start and 90.9 mph in his second start. "I'm fine," said Sabathia, who averaged 94.1 mph with his fastball as recently as 2009, and 92.4 last season. "My arm feels fine, I'm healthy. If there was a problem, I'd be worried about it, but there's nothing I can do. I'm 32 years old, going on 33, and this is my 13th year, so my velocity is going to drop at some point."

Yankees | GM acknowledges lack of velocity for CC Sabathia

Tue, 02 Apr 2013 14:31:05 -0700

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said SP CC Sabathia usually has a lower velocity in April and suggested that he's probably still building arm strength. However, Cashman said his lack of velocity isn't related to the elbow surgery he had in the offseason. Cashman said it may take until May to increase the mph on his fastball.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia has habitually been a slow starter, so this shouldn't be too much of a surprise. However, if his lower velocity sticks around into May, you might want to start worrying. For now, continue starting him as you normally would.

Yankees | More on CC Sabathia's velocity

Mon, 01 Apr 2013 17:08:37 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia's fastball ranged from 89-91 mph in his opening day start Monday, April 1, but manager Joe Girardi said he's not worried about his ace. Sabathia noted that he's a slow starter, but his velocity was even down several mph on all his pitches from a season ago. "I'm sure that the velocity will keep coming back and the arm strength will keep building up the more I throw," Sabathia said. "Health-wise, I feel fine, elbow, shoulder and everything. It's just time I guess to build the arm strength back up."

Fantasy Tip: Like Girardi noted, Sabathia is normally a slow starter. It's definitely possible that he's still building arm strength in his surgically repaired left elbow, so don't read too much into this now. But this situation is definitely worth watching as the season progresses in the early months.

Yankees | CC Sabathia lacks velocity

Mon, 01 Apr 2013 13:57:46 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia didn't crank his fastball consistently past 91 mph during his opening day start Monday, April 1, and he allowed four runs in the second inning and had 102 pitches by the fifth inning. He allowed four runs and eight hits while walking four and striking out five in five frames on the day against the Boston Red Sox.

Fantasy Tip: The low velocity shouldn't be a red flag unless it continues to be a problem after his next couple of starts. Remember, he is coming off surgery to clean up his throwing elbow, so he may be slow out of the gates.

Yankees | CC Sabathia makes debut

Fri, 15 Mar 2013 12:36:21 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (elbow) hit between 88 and 90 mph with his fastball in his spring debut Friday, March 15, and he gave up eight singles in the game. He recorded two strikeouts on offspeed pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia is still ramping up this spring after having elbow cleanup surgery in the offseason, so his velocity should improve in the final weeks of spring training. He has plenty of mileage on his left arm, though, and although he can still be an innings eater for your fantasy staff, he isn't quite the ace that he once was.

Yankees | CC Sabathia likely to make three starts

Thu, 28 Feb 2013 15:45:08 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (elbow) is likely to make only three spring starts this year, and he likely won't make his first one until March 15. He'll throw a simulated game March 5, and his first spring start could come as early as March 10. "I consider a simulated game almost a game," manager Joe Girardi said. "For me, he's really throwing games in a sense. I count those as innings." Sabathia has averaged five starts and 18 innings pitched in the previous four spring trainings.

Yankees | CC Sabathia throws to hitters

Thu, 28 Feb 2013 11:28:31 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (elbow) threw two simulated innings (46 pitches) Thursday, Feb. 28, and was satisfied with how his surgically repaired left elbow felt. "I'm excited that I don't have that little pain in there anymore and just getting used to not dealing with it," said Sabathia, who had arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur in October. "When it's there, you kind of compensate for it a little bit and try not to feel it. Now I can get back to throwing with my normal throwing motion and not feeling that little pain." There is no date for Sabathia to throw in a spring game yet.
