Mon, 17 Jun 2013 13:29:29 -0700 The Detroit Tigers have placed C Alex Avila (forearm) on the 15-day disabled list because of a forearm injury. Manager Jim Leyland believes Avila will be able to return when he is first eligible. Fantasy Tip: Brayan Pena likely will receive most of the starts at catcher while Avila is out of the lineup. Pena could be an option for AL-only owners looking for help at catcher.
Sun, 16 Jun 2013 18:10:19 -0700 Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (forearm) left the team Sunday, June 16, to return to Detroit to have more tests on his forearm. He was hit by a pitch, and was still in pain after the game.
Sun, 16 Jun 2013 13:32:05 -0700 Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (forearm) left the game against the Minnesota Twins Sunday, June 16, in the ninth inning, after being hit in the left forearm with a pitched ball.
Wed, 12 Jun 2013 14:06:50 -0700 Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila will receive a few days off because the team will be facing some left-handed pitchers. Avila has gone 0-for-17 in his last four starts.
Wed, 29 May 2013 09:12:41 -0700 The Detroit Tigers are working with C Alex Avila on his plate approach. They're ditching the toe tap and attempting to shorten his swing. He looked slightly more comfortable during action Tuesday, May 28. Fantasy Tip: Avila has been a sinkhole for stats this year but could show more life soon. If your lineup has two starting catcher slots and he's still available in your league, give him a try before he starts showing signs of improvement. Sometimes these mechanical changes work. If this one doesn't, you didn't spend much to find out.
Sun, 05 May 2013 10:30:34 -0700 Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (illness) is not in the starting lineup against the Houston Astros Sunday, May 5, because of an illness. C Brayan Pena is starting behind the plate.
Sat, 13 Apr 2013 10:59:18 -0700 Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (head, shin) will not start against the Oakland Athletics Saturday, April 13, after he was hit in the helmet by a bat and had a pitch fouled off his right shin Friday, April 12. Avila told manager Jim Leyland that he could be available Saturday, but Leyland decided to err on the side of caution.
Wed, 30 Jan 2013 07:18:29 -0800 Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) said he is healthy this offseason after tendonitis in his knee put a damper on his 2012 season. "I'm already able to do stuff this offseason I wasn't able to do last offseason," Avila said. At the beginning of the season I was fine. But by (May) when I had to miss those two or three games in Seattle, I could hardly walk. It was pretty sudden."
Tue, 29 Jan 2013 13:57:29 -0800 Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) is optimistic that his cranky left knee won't affect his performance this year, and he continues to think that he should be a regular catcher. "I am an everyday catcher. I expect to play every single day," said Avila, who ended last season in a platoon situation with C Gerald Laird. "I mean, what's going to dictate that is my play, and that's my job. That's how I look at it. I plan on catching a lot of games this year." Part of the reason he entered into a timeshare down the stretch last year was because of his .176 average and 30 strikeouts in 85 at-bats against left-handed pitching. Avila received platelet-rich plasma injections shortly after the World Series ended, and he said it has had great results.
Fri, 18 Jan 2013 11:30:31 -0800 The Detroit Tigers avoided arbitration with OF Austin Jackson, SP Doug Fister and C Alex Avila Friday, Jan. 18, by agreeing to one-year deals with each. Fister will make $4 million, Jackson will earn $3.5 million and Avila will receive $2.95 million this year.
