Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery said Tuesday, Jan. 31, that he will not allow impending free-agent RB Matt Forte reach free agency, even if that means slapping the franchise tag on him. The team would prefer to work out a long-term deal with the running back. Forte has hinted of holding out if the franchise tag is placed on him.

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte (knee) was cleared to play in the Pro Bowl Sunday, Jan. 29, and he saw three touches. Forte ran twice for six yards, and he added a 4-yard reception. The most important part of Forte playing was for the impending free-agent to show his knee was healthy.

Chicago Bears impending free-agent RB Matt Forte joked Wednesday, Jan. 18, that he may be hard to find if the franchise tag is put on him before training camp next season, although he wouldn't call it an official holdout. "I wouldn't say holdout, but people probably wouldn't know where I was," said Forte, who admitted there's a "pretty good chance" he'll be franchised. Forte added if he receives the franchise tag, it will hopefully be a sign that the Bears want to negotiate a long-term deal.

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte (knee) said Monday, Jan. 9, that he's "95 percent" recovered from his knee injury and he should be ready for his first Pro Bowl Jan. 29. "I actually just got done running, so I'm doing pretty well right now," Forte said. "I would say I'm about 95 percent. I'll probably have a physical next week heading into the Pro Bowl, so I'll be out there and I should be good to go."

"I'm pretty optimistic even if nothing did happen," Forte said. "It's a long offseason, and I was hopeful that we'd get a long-term deal done in the offseason. I think with the offseason being here we can get something done."

Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith said Monday, Jan. 2, that he is in favor of RB Matt Forte (knee) playing in the Pro Bowl. Forte missed the final four regular season games, but wants to play in the Pro Bowl. He isn't worried about being injured in the Pro Bowl. "The risk because of injury? I mean, I could get injured walking out the door," Forte said. "The Pro Bowl, this is my first time making it, I want to go out there and be on the field. You can't worry about injuries all the time."
