Sat, 25 May 2013 13:32:28 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Jordan Walden (shoulder) threw a side session Friday, May 24, and will throw another one Sunday, May 26. He will appear in one or two minor league rehab games before being activated from the disabled list.
Tue, 21 May 2013 16:49:35 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Jordan Walden (shoulder) felt good Tuesday, May 21, but the team doesn't expect him to be ready to come off the disabled list when eligible Monday, May 27. The team wants him to throw a bullpen and make at least two minor league rehab outings before returning. He threw from 150 feet Tuesday and expects to throw a bullpen Wednesday, May 22. He said his shoulder is feeling strong.
Mon, 20 May 2013 16:14:11 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Jordan Walden (shoulder) said he felt "pretty good" after playing catch Monday, May 20, and he hopes to come off the disabled list when eligible next Monday. Walden will back up to 90 feet Tuesday, May 21, after throwing from 60 feet Monday. The team wants to have Walden make some minor league rehab outings before returning. Fantasy Tip: Walden will be counted on as a top setup man now with Jonny Venters (elbow) and Eric O'Flaherty (elbow) out for the season. He could become the primary eighth-inning bridge to Craig Kimbrel once he's healthy, too.
Fri, 17 May 2013 12:20:48 -0700 The Atlanta Braves activated OF Jason Heyward (appendix) from the 15-day disabled list Friday, May 17, and placed RP Jordan Walden (shoulder) on the DL with right shoulder inflammation. Fantasy Tip: Get Heyward back into your lineups as soon as possible. His return takes whatever fleeting value Reed Johnson and Jordan Schafer had in NL-only leagues. It might be tougher to get Evan Gattis into the lineup now, too.
Thu, 16 May 2013 12:27:55 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Jonny Venters (elbow) will undergo his second Tommy John surgery of his career and will miss the rest of the year. He underwent the elbow reconstruction to fix the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow Thursday, May 16. Fantasy Tip: Venters was used heavily out of the Braves' 'pen the last few seasons, and it has caught up to him. Craig Kimbrel is the unquestioned closer on this team, but Eric O'Flaherty and Jordan Walden will have bigger roles as setup men as a result.
Wed, 08 May 2013 11:24:59 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Craig Kimbrel might not be available to pitch Wednesday, May 8, because manager Fredi Gonzalez doesn't want to pitch Kimbrel for three days in a row this early in the year. Kimbrel has blown three of his last five save chances. He was an out away from his 100th career save Tuesday, May 7, before allowing a home run to the Cincinnati Reds. "It is what it is," Gonzalez said. "At the end of the year, (Kimbrel's) going to have 40-something saves and five blown saves or four blown saves. It just so happens he's getting them right here in a little bunch. No worries." Kimbrel's ERA has risen from 0.00 to 3.38 in his last five outings. Fantasy Tip: As Gonzalez noted, there is no closer controversy with Kimbrel, he's just hit a little rough patch. Atlanta also has no clear candidate to take over the closer's role regardless. Eric O'Flaherty or Jordan Walden would likely close if a save situation arises Wednesday.
Thu, 21 Mar 2013 16:53:23 -0700 Atlanta Braves RPs Cristhian Martinez, Anthony Varvaro, David Carpenter and Wirfin Obispo are all competing for the last open spot in the bullpen. Two spots might be available if RP Jordan Walden (back) isn't ready for the start of the year. The team has backed off RP Jonny Venters for a week, and manager Fredi Gonzalez was vague when asked about the situation. However, Venters is expected to start the year in the bullpen. Varvaro and Martinez are out of minor league options, which makes them the favorites for a spot.
Wed, 20 Mar 2013 16:31:48 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Jordan Walden (back) worked an inning and gave up a run, an infield hit, two walks and had a strikeout in his outing Wednesday, March 20. Walden felt good and hopes to pitch every other day for the remainder of spring camp. However, the team is likely to be more cautious, meaning he could start the year on the disabled list.
Mon, 18 Mar 2013 20:06:33 -0700 Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves RP Jordan Walden (back) was pain-free during a live batting practice session Monday, March 18. Walden will make his Grapefruit League spring debut Wednesday, March 20.
Sat, 16 Mar 2013 18:32:08 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Jordan Walden (back) threw 35 pitches during a live batting practice session Saturday, March 16. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Walden will throw another batting practice session before playing in a game.
