Tampa Bay Rays 3B Evan Longoria said the team is in a better place with SP James Shields and OF B.J. Upton gone. "There was a lot of history with B.J. and Shields and this organization, and I think there were some things that it was tough for them to get beyond," Longoria said. "As much as you try to instill the new way, some of those things, it was tough to get some of those thoughts out of their head. And so, I think, obviously they were great players, but as far as an over-arching belief in what we try to do here, I think with the new people that we have now, it's a completely new belief in what we're trying to do here."

Updating a previous item, Tampa Bay Rays 3B Evan Longoria did not attend the Thursday, Feb. 21, workout, and manager Joe Maddon said he wasn't sure when Longoria would return to the team. Longoria's girlfriend, Jaime Edmondson, gave birth to the couple's first child the night before. "Just wanted to know that he was well, obviously, that she was well and the baby was well and everything was fine," Maddon said. "That's all I wrote. I didn't say when he needed to be back. I didn't ask him when he will be back. I just told him take care of what he has to do and let us know. He told me everything was great."

Tampa Bay Rays 3B Evan Longoria missed workouts Wednesday, Feb. 20, to be with his girlfriend Jamie Edmondson, who is having her labor induced. Edmondson's due date was April 1. The couple is having a girl.
