Blue Jays | Ricky Romero needs more time

Thu, 09 May 2013 13:01:14 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker said SP Ricky Romero needs more time to implement the changes that he had made earlier this season.

Fantasy Tip: Walker isn't regretting the initial call to bring Romero up from the minors, but he's acknowledging that he's not quite ready yet. How long it will take for him to be ready is anyone's guess. Romero is still thinking too much about his mechanics and is a bit off. When he comes up again, he's worth taking a shot on in AL leagues, but we'll need to see more consistency over more than just one start in mixed leagues to feel comfortable relying on him.

Blue Jays | Josh Johnson may not be back until end of month

Mon, 06 May 2013 12:04:53 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Josh Johnson (triceps) may not be able to return until late May, and the Blue Jays are hoping SP Ricky Romero can continue to hold the rotation spot until then.

Fantasy Tip: Romero didn't wow anyone in his first start of the season in place of Johnson last week, but he wasn't a complete disaster, either. Until Johnson returns, Romero isn't a bad gamble in very deep mixed leagues. He should be owned in most AL-only leagues, however.

Blue Jays | Ricky Romero's mechanical adjustments

Thu, 02 May 2013 15:14:00 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Ricky Romero focused on keeping his body in a straight line to home plate and following through consistently on his pitches with minor league pitching guru Dane Johnson. The team decided Romero had made excellent progress while pitching for Single-A Dunedin. He gave up six hits and a run while walking none and striking out four and inducing 14 ground-ball outs last weekend.

Fantasy Tip: The Blue Jays indicated last weekend that they were encouraged with Romero's early returns in the minors, but they wouldn't rush him back to the bigs. That has all changed thanks to the injury to Josh Johnson (triceps), so Romero continues to be a high-risk commodity in mixed leagues.

Blue Jays | Ricky Romero to take Josh Johnson's turn

Thu, 02 May 2013 11:13:07 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Ricky Romero is scheduled to start on Friday, May 3, in place of Josh Johnson (triceps).

Fantasy Tip: Romero couldn't hang on to a rotation spot in spring training thanks to troubles with control and command while attempting to come back strong following an awful 2012 marred by a knee injury and that ended with elbow surgery. He's been working on some mechanical adjustments since sometime in March and had an encouraging outing (six hits, one run, no walks and four K's) for advanced Class A Dunedin last week. Still, it's far from certain that the changes will stick, so Romero is definitely a risky pickup. Those in very deep leagues may want to give him a look, though, especially if Johnson's injury turns out to be serious and Romero is regaining his pre-2012 form.
