Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost said 2B Johnny Giavotella will play second base against left-handed pitchers, with 2B Chris Getz in the other side of the platoon. The situation will likely change when INF Yuniesky Betancourt (ankle) returns from the disabled list next week.

The Kansas City Royals placed SS Yuniesky Betancourt (ankle) on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle Thursday, May 3. INF Irving Falu was recalled from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move. Also, RP Joakim Soria (elbow) was moved to the 60-day disabled list. Betancourt's DL stint is retroactive to Wednesday, May 2.

Kansas City Royals 2B Yuniesky Betancourt served as the leadoff hitter for the first time in his career Saturday, April 21, against the Toronto Blue Jays. DH Billy Butler was moved from the cleanup spot to the No. 3 spot in the batting order. "We tried to make some minor adjustments, shake things up a little bit," manager Ned Yost said. "It's a different look to see if we can't get some offense going. Every once in a while it's good to make an adjustment especially when you're struggling a little bit offensively."

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost indicated Sunday, March 25, that SS Yuniesky Betancourt will share second base duty with 2B Chris Getz, as the team prefers their defense over other offensive options.

The Kansas City Royals have optioned 2B Johnny Giavotella to Triple-A Omaha, meaning that the parent club will use a platoon of Yuniesky Betancourt and Chris Getz at second base. "(Giavotella) needs to continue to focus on his defense," manager Ned Yost said. "Johnny is a much better defender today than he was at this time last year, but we had two better defensive options in Betancourt and Getz." Betancourt will also serve as the team's primary backup option at shortstop and third base.

Giavotella's demotion means that OF Lorenzo Cain could become the No. 2 hitter in the batting order, because placing Getz in that role would give the Royals three consecutive left-handed hitters at the top of their lineup, between OF Alex Gordon and 1B Eric Hosmer.
