New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) faced hitters for the first time since having Tommy John surgery last April Thursday, Feb. 26, and he viewed the workout as a positive, even though the hitters were just tracking pitches. "He's going to be a piece we're going to have to have. Like I said to him, 'You've got to still take it slow.' Hopefully by the end of spring training he gets into a couple of games," manager Terry Collins said.


Dodgers | Joel Peralta should be ready

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (abdomen) will be cleared to continue throwing while he allows his abdominal area to heal from a slight strain that should allow him to be ready for the season opener April 5. The Cardinals, however, will have Wainwright "take it slow for about four or five days." He will wait some time to return to the mound, though. The Cardinals ideally would like Wainwright to make four Grapefruit League starts.

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Yasmany Tomas worked out at third base in camp Wednesday, Feb. 25, and he was rough around the edges at the hot corner, bobbling some balls and misplaying others at times while showing an improper technique. Tomas, 24, was primarily an outfielder in Cuba, but he is downplaying the transition. At 6-2, 230 pounds, manager Chip Hale said the team needs to make sure his thick, strong build will be able to hold up at third base. The D-backs will have to make a decision some point next month on where Tomas will play.

New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy said he is open to extension talks with the club during the season, but no in-season extension talks are planned, according to a team source. That means Murphy will likely head to free agency next offseason. The source noted that the Mets are deep in upper-level middle infield prospects like INFs Dilson Herrera, Matthew Reynolds and even Wilmer Flores. Murphy is set to earn $8 million this season.

"I was able to do the things I wanted to do when I was in high school and college," Harper said of his offseason fitness regimen. "Switching things up a little bit, more fast-paced workouts. I'm doing 1,000 reps workout in 45 minutes. Just trying to roll through it as quick as I can, doing the things I need to do to get a little leaner and do things like that, but my strength is still there, my power is still there, so I feel very good."
