Nationals | Roger Bernadina to visit doctor
Rockies | Pull plug on Jeff Francis
The Colorado Rockies are expected to option SP Jeff Francis to Triple-A Colorado Springs Thursday, June 20, as the team uses his roster spot for SP Roy Oswalt. The locker for Francis was cleared out Wednesday, June 19. There is a possibility Francis could remain in the organization, but he would need to approve the move to the minors due to his major league service time. The team wants to keep him in the organization for depth.
Pirates | A.J. Burnett not making progress
Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Wednesday, June 19, that SP A.J. Burnett (calf) "has been nowhere near a mound" as he recovers from a strained right calf. "We're working on flexibility, mobility and strengthening," Hurdle said. "That's not to say that can't change in another 24 hours with A.J. He's really tried to not do some things at all and do a lot of things. As far as rehab goes, he didn't want to do anything as far as moving around other than strengthening, loosening and working on the flexion part of it."
Pirates | Pedro Alvarez still striking out
Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez has shown some improvement at the plate, hitting safely in 15 of his past 17 after the game Wednesday, June 19, against the Cincinnati Reds. However, he entered the game with 81 strikeouts in 215 at-bats, and he had a .282 on-base percentage. "How do you maximize the swing of the bat that you get when you get it?" manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's been a very good run producer for this team this season. He's had a lot of opportunities, as well, but he has shown the ability to rise to the occasion."
Pirates | Michael Zagurski elects free agency
Mets | No lateral movement for Ruben Tejada
New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada (quadriceps) has yet to resume any lateral movement in his recovery from a strained right quadriceps muscle. He has been fielding grounders hit directly at him, but is not yet running on his injured right leg. The team still has no timetable for his return.
Mets | Josh Satin works out at 3B
New York Mets 1B Josh Satin worked out at third base during batting practice Wednesday, June 19. Manager Terry Collins said he wants to give 3B David Wright a day off soon, and Satin could be the man to fill in when that time comes.
Mets | Zack Wheeler to rejoin team next week
New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler flew Wednesday, June 19, to Tucson, Ariz., where he will join Triple-A Las Vegas. However, he is expected to rejoin the Mets next week during their road trip to Chicago. "He certainly understood the whole situation," manager Terry Collins said.
Mets | Luis Mateo recovering
Mets | David Wright benefits from scoring change

Nationals | Danny Espinosa to work on approach
The Washington Nationals want 2B Danny Espinosa to work on his approach at the plate with Triple-A Syracuse. Espinosa went 2-for-21 with an RBI, three walks and 14 strikeouts while on his rehab assignment. "We need for him to get to a place in his mechanics and his approach that allows him to put the barrel of the bat on the ball and to utilize the other skills that he has: power, speed, defense and that type of thing," general manager Mike Rizzo said. "He has to be more consistent and have an approach that allows him to succeed at this level." Rizzo said 2B Anthony Rendon's performance at the big league level won't impact the team's plans for Espinosa.
Mets | Will return to five-man rotation
The New York Mets will return to a five-man rotation after the All-Star break, and manager Terry Collins indicated that SPs Shaun Marcum, Jeremy Hefner and Dillon Gee aren't guaranteed to have spots in the rotation when that happens. Marcum's $4 million salary doesn't make him immune, especially with the way Gee has pitched lately. Hefner could be moved to the bullpen or optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. "When we get back to five guys, I think we're going to take the five guys that we think are the best to run out there every fifth day, and what gives us the best opportunity to win," Collins said.
Reds | Brandon Phillips slumping
Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips is in a 3-for-28 (.107) slump and was fined by manager Dusty Baker last week for not running hard to first base. "He is trying too hard more than anything," said Baker. "He ain't hurtin' any more (from getting hit on the forearm by a pitch in Pittsburgh). He is just swinging at bad pitches and nobody is going to hit swinging at bad pitches."
Nationals | Roger Bernadina scratched
Mets | Ruben Tejada not improving
New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada (quadriceps) is not ready to perform lateral movements when he fields groundballs in Florida. However, he's been hitting off a tee. It doesn't appear as if he's close to returning. SS Omar Quintanilla is hitting .250 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 64 at-bats in Tejada's absence.
Reds | Injury updates
Cincinnati Reds RP Jonathan Broxton (forearm) has been shut down since landing on the disabled list. "He's been working on strengthening it," trainer Paul Lessard said. "He finally has his full range of motion back. We wanted to get it flushed out. He'll probably start throwing again this weekend. I don't want to call it a target date, but that's what we're looking at. RP Sean Marshall (shoulder) is long tossing from 120 feet.
