The Colorado Rockies are expected to option SP Jeff Francis to Triple-A Colorado Springs Thursday, June 20, as the team uses his roster spot for SP Roy Oswalt. The locker for Francis was cleared out Wednesday, June 19. There is a possibility Francis could remain in the organization, but he would need to approve the move to the minors due to his major league service time. The team wants to keep him in the organization for depth.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Wednesday, June 19, that SP A.J. Burnett (calf) "has been nowhere near a mound" as he recovers from a strained right calf. "We're working on flexibility, mobility and strengthening," Hurdle said. "That's not to say that can't change in another 24 hours with A.J. He's really tried to not do some things at all and do a lot of things. As far as rehab goes, he didn't want to do anything as far as moving around other than strengthening, loosening and working on the flexion part of it."

However, he entered the game with 81 strikeouts in 215 at-bats, and he had a .282 on-base percentage. "How do you maximize the swing of the bat that you get when you get it?" manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's been a very good run producer for this team this season. He's had a lot of opportunities, as well, but he has shown the ability to rise to the occasion."

"We need for him to get to a place in his mechanics and his approach that allows him to put the barrel of the bat on the ball and to utilize the other skills that he has: power, speed, defense and that type of thing," general manager Mike Rizzo said. "He has to be more consistent and have an approach that allows him to succeed at this level." Rizzo said 2B Anthony Rendon's performance at the big league level won't impact the team's plans for Espinosa.

The New York Mets will return to a five-man rotation after the All-Star break, and manager Terry Collins indicated that SPs Shaun Marcum, Jeremy Hefner and Dillon Gee aren't guaranteed to have spots in the rotation when that happens. Marcum's $4 million salary doesn't make him immune, especially with the way Gee has pitched lately. Hefner could be moved to the bullpen or optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. "When we get back to five guys, I think we're going to take the five guys that we think are the best to run out there every fifth day, and what gives us the best opportunity to win," Collins said.
