New York Mets OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis (kidney) is expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday, Sept. 30, after being hospitalized due to an infection related to kidney stones. He is feeling much better. Nieuwenhuis hit .259 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 116 at-bats this year, and he's expected to be a factor off the bench in 2015.

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Jon Niese (heart) was feeling better Saturday, Sept. 27, and manager Terry Collins said he will probably visit a doctor Monday, Sept. 29. "He's had these before," Collins said of Niese's elevated heart rate, which caused him to leave his start Friday, Sept. 26. "He said (Friday night) he just got a little more light-headed than usual."

Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun (thumb) will undergo a minimally invasive surgery called a cryotherapy procedure on his right thumb Thursday, Oct. 2. There is no track record for the procedure, which induces low temperatures to freeze damaged tissue. "This type of procedure has been successful with other parts of the body," assistant general manager Gord Ash said. "Never on a thumb, but it's worth a try. Our understanding is that there is no downside to it; that it can't make it worse."
