Dodgers | May cool on Yoan Moncada
Thu, 29 Jan 2015 13:27:39 -0800
Cuban SS Yoan Moncada is of interest to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but their interest could be cooled by penalties that would be levied against the team if they pursue him. Scouts have compared Moncada to a young Seattle Mariners 2B Robinson Cano. However, because he's only 19 and didn't play in the Cuban professional league for at least five years, he's subject to international signing guidelines that didn't exist for the Dodgers when they landed OF Yasiel Puig in 2013. Each team is given a $700,000 base plus a bonus pool determined by the team's record the previous year for the international signing bonus. Moncada will likely command a signing bonus between $30 and $40 million, and a 100% penalty would be assessed to the Dodgers exceeding its allotted bonus pool in a one-year period. The penalty would also ban the signing club from re-entering the international market for eligible players for an additional two years.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco may have big workload
Thu, 29 Jan 2015 09:18:12 -0800
Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco could receive around 145 starts at catcher this season, because manager Bryan Price does not think the team will use him at first base. "I anticipate Mesoraco catching a lot more games this year, especially if he stays healthy. We won't pair Pena with Cueto as much. Devin did a real nice job with Johnny the times he caught him," Price said.
