Diamondbacks | Stephen Drew still a question mark

Arizona Diamondbacks SS Stephen Drew's (ankle) status for spring training is still very much unknown as he continues to rehab from major ankle surgery last year. "I would imagine we'll have to take it rather slowly with him in spring training," general manager Kevin Towers said last week. "I'm hopeful he'll play in some games in spring training. Will he play in our opening game? I don't know." Drew has declined interviews to discuss his progress.

Colorado Rockies 2B Chris Nelson will be competing with 2B Jonathan Herrera, 3B Brendan Harris, 3B Brandon Wood, 3B DJ LeMahieu, 2B Eric Young Jr. and 3B Jordan Pacheco in spring training for a spot as a utility infielder this year behind 2B Marco Scutaro.

Manager Jim Tracy pointed out that Nelson's back hip was drifting into pitches last year, which made it tough for him to get inside the inside pitches and keep from being jammed. "I got exposed a little bit last year with fastballs in, with me coming up trying to take everything to right field," Nelson said. "Guys are a little smarter and they saw that. They started jamming me, coming in more. This offseason, I just worked on the inside pitch while still staying consistent away."

He is currently ahead of schedule in his rehab and has been cleared to resume jogging and increasing the intensity of his workouts. "I've been really happy so far," Castro said. "I've been doing quite a bit of work on the rehab, physical therapy side, and the whole healing process and everything has actually gone really well. I'm pretty much ahead of schedule as far as the way it's been healing and the progress I've made in my rehab and everything," Castro said. He projects to be the team's starting catcher this year.
