Padres | Wil Myers has chip on his shoulder
Fri, 06 Mar 2015 14:01:58 -0800
San Diego Padres OF Wil Myers is coming along fine playing center field in spring training, according to manager Bud Black. "Wil's doing great," Black said. "I'm very positive on him. Wil is moving in center. He has long strides, good routes, good angles. His hands are good. He sees the ball off the bat. And he has the desire to play center field. We've got another good center fielder in Cameron Maybin. We feel we have center field covered. Myers is going to be fine." Myers has had trouble taking direction, though, and may be a "work in progress," according to a source. Myers doesn't lack confidence, though, and the Tampa Bay Rays may have thought he was trending toward slightly cocky. Myers is taking his trade from Tampa Bay as a chance to prove them wrong, and he's playing with a chip on his shoulder.

He isn't worried about not being ready for opening day.

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 13:52:17 -0800
Colorado Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki (hip) is simulating game situations at the plate, on the field and on the bases to test his left hip in camp. "Every day I'm working on running out a base hit," said Tulowitzki, who suffered his injury July 19 in Pittsburgh while coming out of the batter's box. "Or it might be first-to-third, or first-to-home. I'll put myself in all those before I get into a game. You know how prepared and crazy I am about all that stuff. I think I'm ready for games, but it wouldn't be smart to put myself out there without it."

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson adds curve ball
Fri, 06 Mar 2015 11:20:41 -0800
Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson (hamstring) is throwing a curve ball this spring after he struggled to keep hitters off balance in 2014 with a reliable offspeed pitch. He'll continue to primarily use a fastball and sinker, his two best pitches, and mix in the curve ball. Nelson has yet to pitch in a spring game due to a tight hamstring, but he was impressive during live batting practice Friday, March 6. Nelson struggled using his changeup last year and command was also an issue as he went 2-9 with a 4.93 ERA in 14 outings (12 starts). The team hopes Nelson can pitch in a game early next week.
Braves | Mike Minor not too concerned
Fri, 06 Mar 2015 11:13:05 -0800
Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) will visit with Dr. James Andrews about his sore left shoulder next week, but Minor isn't too concerned. "It would really surprise me if there was something majorly wrong. Last year there was a lot more pain than right now. I was throwing all year, trying to make every start. I could throw (now), I could pitch and potentially I don't think anybody would even notice if I didn't say anything," Minor said. Minor struggled through 2014 while pitching through shoulder pain for much of the year, and the Braves don't want to go down that road again. The worst-case scenario might be exploratory surgery to find out what is wrong in his shoulder.

Tomas downplayed his progress at the hot corner, though. He misplayed one ball while looking indecisive, and several of his throws needed to be dug out at first base. Tomas has gone 0-for-3 in each of his first two spring games.

"It felt great," the slugger said. "I felt good in the box. We're right on track. But it was good to be in a game setting again." Any concerns about Stanton being hesitant at the plate were answered with St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez humming heaters in at 95-96 mph. Stanton isn't being held back at all this spring, and he's in the process of getting his timing down at the plate. He feels mentally and physically ready, but he is wearing a wire attachment on his helmet as a precaution.
