Cleveland Indians SP Trevor Bauer focused on his two-seam fastball in his first spring training start Thursday, March 5. "It was nice to be in a game situation again," said Bauer. "In live BP and bullpen [sessions], the adrenaline isn't quite there and you never quite know how things are going to turn out when your adrenaline is there and you have a defense behind you and in a stadium. I was pleased with it." Bauer allowed one unearned run on three hits in three innings in the start.

Angels | Arbitrator to decide fate of Josh Hamilton

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton will have an arbitrator decide if he should enter rehab for drug use after a four-person disciplinary committee is deadlocked, according to a source. Hamilton met with MLB officials Feb. 25 regarding a relapse of substance abuse. He'll be owed only a full salary for 30 days and half his salary for the next 30 days if he's sent to rehab, and he's scheduled to make $25 million this year. If he's suspended and not in treatment, he won't be paid. MLB is deciding if they should classify Hamilton as a fourth-time offender of the drug policy. Violators face up to a full-season suspension for a fourth offense.


Red Sox | Mookie Betts leading candidate for CF

Boston Red Sox OF Mookie Betts is now the leading candidate for the starting center field job with OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) dealing with a strained left oblique. It seems like a certainty that Betts will start the year as the center fielder. There is no timetable for Castillo's return and the likely best-case-scenario will that Castillo will be given more time to prepare for the regular season. Betts spent much of the offseason trying to get stronger, and he said he now weighs 180 pounds after being listed at 160.

Farrell said it's too early to tell if Castillo's availability for opening day will be affected. "There's caution to the progression, there's no doubt," Farrell said. "(Pain) tolerance, for one. How aggressive you become to build that back. We just want to be careful of a setback, because everything is rotational in this game." The competition with OF Mookie Betts for the starting center field job will be on hold for now. Castillo doesn't think the injury will affect his ability to be ready for the season. OF Jackie Bradley Jr. will see more playing time in center in camp with Castillo sidelined.

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp will be moved from center field to left field this year in an effort to keep him healthy as he ages. OFs Craig Gentry and Sam Fuld will form a platoon in center field. Crips played in just 126 games in 2014 due to a lingering neck issue that he suffered while crashing into the outfield wall, and he hasn't played in more than 136 games since 2007. Crisp has appeared in left field 232 times in his 13-year career, including 138 times in 2205. Manager Bob Melvin expects Crisp to remain exclusively in left field this spring.
