Padres | Jeff Francoeur starting

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:59:42 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Jeff Francoeur is in the starting lineup and hitting fifth Friday, July 25, against the Atlanta Braves.

FANTASY TIP: Francoeur could hit his way into semi-regular at-bats and should be owned in NL-only formats. His numbers at Triple-A El Paso were impressive.

Orioles | Manny Machado out again

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:52:12 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado (back) is not in the lineup Friday, July 25. It's the fourth consecutive day he has missed. Machado said Thursday, July 24, that he was getting better, though.

FANTASY TIP: Keep playing the waiting game, but don't be surprised if a retroactive DL stint comes to pass.

Braves | Gavin Floyd update

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:46:16 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Gavin Floyd (elbow) passed his first post-surgery test from a fractured right elbow. There is still no timetable for a return, but the injury is expected to be season ending. Floyd will have a second checkup and X-ray in another four weeks. He isn't ready to begin baseball activities, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez.

FANTASY TIP: Don't expect any fantasy production from Floyd until next season.

Dodgers | Yasiel Puig, Hanley Ramirez return

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:40:20 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig (hand) and SS Hanley Ramirez (hand) are in the starting lineup Friday, July 24, against the San Francisco Giants.

FANTASY TIP: Return Puig and Ramirez to your lineups.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez update

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:36:07 -0700

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez (knee) completed drills Friday, July 24, and could be available off the bench.

FANTASY TIP: It appears like Alvarez will return over the weekend, which is good news for fantasy owners. Don't be afraid to give him a game to prove his health, though.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole to rehab Monday

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:32:50 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (lat) said he will make a rehab start Monday, July 28, for Triple-A Indianapolis.

FANTASY TIP: Cole could be back sometime in early August at that rate. Hopefully his quick and painful return last time taught him to take his time in this recovery. He's a must-start when he comes back, frankly because you're running out of time to use him this year.

Giants | Make roster moves

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:25:25 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2Bs Ehire Adrianza (hamstring) and Marco Scutaro (back) were placed on the disabled list Friday, July 25. In corresponding moves, 2Bs Dan Uggla and Tony Abreu were recalled from Triple-A Fresno. SS Nick Noonan and P Jose De Paula were designated for assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster.

Indians | Asdrubal Cabrera improving

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:15:31 -0700

Cleveland Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera (back) felt better Friday, July 25, as he increased his activity, according to manager Terry Francona. Cabrera should be available off the bench Saturday, July 26, and could return to the starting lineup Sunday, July 27.

FANTASY TIP: Stay tuned as more comes out on Cabrera's status over the weekend.

Giants | Dan Uggla recalled, starting

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:14:41 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2B Dan Uggla was recalled from Triple-A Fresno Friday, July 24. Uggla is starting at second base and hitting eighth against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

FANTASY TIP: Uggla has NL-only value. Desperate deep-mixed-league owners could take a flier, if you need home run help and can afford a potential batting average anchor.

Padres | Jedd Gyorko, Yonder Alonso returning soon?

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:02:45 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Jedd Gyorko (foot) and 1B Yonder Alonso (wrist) could rejoin the team this weekend during the series against the Atlanta Braves, according to manager Bud Black.

FANTASY TIP: With improved health, Gyorko could provide solid power numbers down the stretch in all formats, especially for a second baseman. Alonso is best suited for deep mixed leagues and NL-only formats. Alonso is also a better fit in OBP formats.

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:00:32 -0700

Oakland Athletics 2B Alberto Callaspo (hamstring) is on track to play a rehab contest for High Single-A Stockton on Saturday, July 26, and manager Bob Melvin said Callaspo could be activated Sunday, July 27, if all goes right.

FANTASY TIP: Callaspo would return to AL-only utility. He's not an ideal deep-mixed MI.

Royals | Eric Hosmer better

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 14:58:42 -0700

Kansas City Royals 1B Eric Hosmer (hand) is feeling "a little better" Friday, July 25, and could return Sunday, July 27, according to manager Ned Yost. He also said if Hosmer isn't at close to full health Sunday, he'll instead come back Tuesday, July 29.

FANTASY TIP: Sounds like a day-to-day deal that could wind up in a DL stint if Hosmer can't improve. We'll keep you posted.

Pirates | Gaby Sanchez batting cleanup

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 14:53:48 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Gaby Sanchez is batting fourth and playing first base Friday, July 25, against the Colorado Rockies.

FANTASY TIP: Sanchez faces lefty Brett Anderson in hitter-friendly Coors Field tonight. It is a favorable matchup given his .274/.346/.493 slash line against left-handed pitchers. Sanchez's low price in daily games makes him a viable option tonight.

Cubs | Anthony Rizzo extends to 10

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 14:47:50 -0700

Chicago Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo hit a third-inning single Friday, July 25, to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

FANTASY TIP: Fantasy owners who locked up Rizzo in the middle rounds this spring are reaping the rewards of a monster season.

Twins | Phil Hughes OK

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 14:44:39 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (shin) was sore but "not as bad as he thought he might be" after being hit on the shin by a comebacker Thursday, July 24, according to manager Ron Gardenhire. Gardenhire believes Hughes will make his next start.

FANTASY TIP: Wait as long as you can before deciding to activate Hughes, but his matchup with the Padres is enticing.

Phillies | Ryan Howard endorsed by GM

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 14:38:18 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard will be the team's first baseman in 2015, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

FANTASY TIP: Howard's 2015 fantasy value doesn't look enticing, outside a final-round flier in mixed leagues.

Twins | Kyle Gibson encouraged by session

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 14:37:18 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Kyle Gibson (back) was pleased with his long-toss session from 120 feet and the 10 to 15 throws he made in the bullpen Friday, July 25. He's hopeful he can return to the rotation Tuesday, July 29.

FANTASY TIP: The matchup against the Kansas City Royals would be favorable, but he's been living on borrowed statistical time and would probably be rusty. Do you need the stream in a deep mixed league?

Mets | Daisuke Matsuzaka to have MRI

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 14:27:12 -0700

New York Mets RP Daisuke Matsuzaka (elbow) will have an MRI test on his elbow in New York.

FANTASY TIP: Check back for further updates. It could just be a precautionary test.

Pirates | No Pedro Alvarez

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 14:25:48 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez (knee) is not in the starting lineup Friday, July 25, against the Colorado Rockies. 3B Brent Morel is filling in at third and hitting eighth.

FANTASY TIP: Morel is worth a look in daily games. He is cheap, and the game is being played at hitter-friendly Coors Field. Alvarez hasn't played since he left early Tuesday, July 22, because of left knee discomfort. Check back for updates on Alvarez's status.

Mariners | Kendrys Morales hitting cleanup

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 14:23:02 -0700

Seattle Mariners DH Kendrys Morales is hitting cleanup Friday, July 25.

FANTASY TIP: The potential for these run-producing opportunities is where his value will come in handy for mixed leagues, though Seattle's offense has been inconsistent.
