Marlins | Jeff Baker pushes hit streak to double digits

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 21:34:10 -0700

Miami Marlins INF Jeff Baker went 1-for-4 with a strikeout Friday, July 25, against the Houston Astros, and that was good enough to push his hitting streak to 10 games.

FANTASY TIP: Baker is actually tied for the longest active hitting streak in the National League. He is a solid value in daily fantasy salary cap formats while he is hitting. Baker is hitting .444 (12-for-27) during the impressive run.

Twins | Logan Darnell up, Jorge Polanco down

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 21:33:32 -0700

The Minnesota Twins recalled SP Logan Darnell from Triple-A Rochester to start Saturday, July 26, against the Chicago White Sox, and they optioned SS Jorge Polanco to Double-A New Britain.

Braves | Tyler Pastornicky optioned

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 21:32:46 -0700

The Atlanta Braves optioned INF Tyler Pastornicky to Triple-A Gwinnett Friday, July 25. No corresponding roster move was announced.

Athletics | Yoenis Cespedes back in action

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 21:32:26 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Yoenis Cespedes (thumb) returned to the starting lineup Friday, July 25, against the Texas Rangers. He went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, starting in center field and batting third in the lineup.

Angels | Josh Hamilton leaves game

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:39:57 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton (knee) left the game Friday, July 25, against the Detroit Tigers due to a sore left knee.

Yankees | David Robertson humming along

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:38:54 -0700

New York Yankees RP David Robertson allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts Friday, July 25, against the Toronto Blue Jays to secure his 26th save in 28 chances.

FANTASY TIP: Robertson isn't going to make anyone forget Mariano Rivera anytime soon, but he has done a superb job taking over the closer role from the legend and not being overwhelmed filling giant shoes. Robertson is a top-notch fantasy closer.

Yankees | Chris Capuano might get off to good start

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:38:12 -0700

The New York Yankees turn to newcomer SP Chris Capuano Saturday, July 26, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto has lost 17 consecutive games at Yankee Stadium, and the New York Yankees have won 26 of the past 36 meetings in this series after New York won 6-4 Friday, July 25.

FANTASY TIP: Capuano will be opposed by Drew Hutchison, who is 0-3 with a 9.22 ERA in 13 2/3 innings against the Yankees this season. Capuano might be a sleeper play in daily fantasy leagues Saturday.

Yankees | Mark Teixeira unlikely for weekend

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:37:23 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (back) is unlikely to play during the team's weekend series against the Toronto Blue Jays, manager Joe Girardi said Friday, July 25. He might be able to return Monday, July 28, on the road against the Texas Rangers.

FANTASY TIP: Teixeira is a risky play for the upcoming scoring period, and if he is unable to prove his health sometime this weekend (which sounds unlikely), keep him reserved in the upcoming week. He still could land on the 15-day disabled list, creating a huge hole in your lineup.

Phillies | Ryan Howard benched again

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:36:35 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard was on the bench for a third consecutive day Friday, July 25, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. His replacement, 1B/OF Darin Ruf, went 1-for-2 with a double, walk, run scored and RBI.

FANTASY TIP: Philly was facing another left-handed starter, and Howard is hitting just .209 (19-for-91) with 40 strikeouts and a .275 on-base percentage vs. LHP. If he sits Saturday against Diamondbacks SP Josh Collmenter, a righty, then fantasy owners should really be concerned.

Phillies | Kyle Kendrick has topped every NL team

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:36:12 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Kyle Kendrick allowed three runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings Friday, July 25, in a win against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was his first win in eight career starts against the Diamondbacks, and he now has a victory against every team in the National League.

Phillies | Grady Sizemore reaches milestone

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:34:31 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Grady Sizemore had a three-hit night, including his 1,000th career hit, Friday, July 25, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. One of his hits went for a double, and he also drove in a run.

FANTASY TIP: Sizemore's 1000th hit should have come years ago in Cleveland, but years of recovery after microfracture surgery delayed the milestone. He is best used as a No. 4 or 5 fantasy outfielder in NL-only leagues at this point.

Indians | Justin Masterson pounded in rehab

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:32:48 -0700

Cleveland Indians SP Justin Masterson (knee) allowed five runs, four hits and six walks over 6 2/3 innings in a minor-league rehab outing for Triple-A Columbus Friday, July 25.

FANTASY TIP: The stat line isn't as bad as it looks, as he hit left with the bases loaded and all three runs came in to score. The command issues are what is really striking about the line, as six walks simply will not do. Fantasy owners will want to keep him reserved for his first couple of starts when he returns to the big club, letting him prove his health and show his command is back.

Diamondbacks | Mark Trumbo slumping hard

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:31:51 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Mark Trumbo was hitless in four at-bats Friday, July 25, to extend his slump to 3-for-24. He is now hitting just .191 overall this season.

FANTASY TIP: Trumbo's first season in the desert has been a nightmare, as he has struggled with injuries and inconsistency all season. At this point, he should only be active in deeper NL-only fantasy leagues until he starts to show signs of life at the plate.

Diamondbacks | Wade Miley's win streak snuffed

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:31:09 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Wade Miley allowed six runs - five earned - and eight hits over five innings in a loss against the Philadelphia Phillies Friday, July 25. Miley had won his previous three outings while posting 19 strikeouts over 20 2/3 innings with a 1.74 ERA.

FANTASY TIP: Miley has been pitching well for fantasy owners lately, and Citizens Bank Ball Park is a bit of a bandbox. Don't let Friday's performance dissuade you from using Miley going forward, as it was a tough park against a lineup which was certainly due.

Cubs | Travis Wood helps himself

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:28:53 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Travis Wood allowed five runs - two earned - and seven hits with one walk over five innings in a no-decision Friday, July 25, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He recovered after a rocky start, allowing three runs in the first inning.

FANTASY TIP: The good news is that Wood settled down and allowed himself to stay in the game, because he homered in the fourth inning to help his own cause. He remains nothing more than a stopgap NL-only fantasy option in head-to-head. His 7-9 record, 5.06 ERA and 1.53 WHIP does little for rotisserie owners.

Cubs | Edwin Jackson expected to make next start

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:28:24 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs SP Edwin Jackson (hand) is expected to make his next scheduled start Tuesday, July 29, against the Colorado Rockies. He left his start Thursday, July 24, due to cramping in his pitching hand.

Cardinals | Shelby Miller set to toe slab Saturday

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:28:00 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Shelby Miller (back) will make the start Saturday, July 26, against the Chicago Cubs, making his first start since July 10 due to a minor back ailment. He was temporarily moved to the bullpen where he worked one inning in his only relief appearance.

Blue Jays | Drew Hutchison struggles when seeing pinstripes

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:27:17 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Drew Hutchison is the probable pitcher for Saturday, July 26, against the New York Yankees. He is 0-3 with a 9.22 ERA in three starts over 13 2/3 innings against the Yankees this season.

FANTASY TIP: If you were contemplating starting Hutchison in daily fantasy Saturday, don't do it. Plus, the Blue Jays have dropped 17 straight road games to the Yankees, and Hutchison hardly has the numbers to suggest that skid is going to end.

Blue Jays | Ten years and counting for Mark Buehrle

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:25:55 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Mark Buehrle allowed six runs and nine hits over three innings Friday, July 25, against the New York Yankees, his shortest outing since June 6, 2010, when he was a member of the Chicago White Sox. He hasn't beaten the Yankees since 2004, and the Blue Jays have dropped 17 straight road games against the Yankees, a skid which started September 2012. It is the longest losing streak at one opponent since the Tampa Bay Rays lost 18 in a row on the road against the Cleveland Indians from September 2005 to July 2010.

FANTASY TIP: Buehrle started the season 10-1, and was a huge sell-high fantasy candidate. He is now 0-6 with a 4.83 ERA over his past nine starts since his last victory June 1.

Cardinals | A.J. Pierzynski to sign Saturday

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 18:49:05 -0700

Updating a previous report, the St. Louis Cardinals will sign free-agent C A.J. Pierzynski (Red Sox) Saturday, July 26. He has already joined up with the club in Chicago.

FANTASY TIP: Pierzynski still has a little something left in the tank, and he obviously wasn't a fit (and he'll tell you and the team in an open letter) with the Red Sox. The veteran is an upgrade over Tony Cruz and George Kottaras to bridge the gap until Yadier Molina can return. He is a nice NL-only pickup at catcher, and still a serviceable No. 2 backstop in mixed formats.
