Dodgers | Don Mattingly concerned about Yasiel Puig

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 15:27:37 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he worries about OF Yasiel Puig after reports surfaced Wednesday, April 16, that reports he has received death threats from human traffickers that helped him defect from Cuba in 2012. "If you care about Yasiel, you worry about it," Mattingly said. "There's some serious stuff that he has to deal with. I think you have to worry about it if you care about him as a person. You worry about what he's going through."

FANTASY TIP: We'll never know if all the details of the report on Puig are true or how some of these allegations are weighing on his mind or affecting his play. As long as he's in the lineup, he needs to be in yours. Bottom line.

Rangers | Kevin Kouzmanoff continues to deliver

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 15:23:36 -0700

Texas Rangers 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff doubled twice and scored two runs in the team victory Thursday, April 17, and he's hitting .414 since being recalled from the minors April 9. He has hit in all eight games in which he has played this year.

FANTASY TIP: Kouzmanoff has resurfaced out of nowhere. He's not dead just yet, fantasy baseball players. In the short term with Adrian Beltre (quadriceps) on the DL, you might as well ride the hot streak in cavernous mixed and AL-only setups.

Rangers | Tanner Scheppers expected to stay in rotation

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 15:18:43 -0700

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said the plan for now is to keep SP Tanner Scheppers in the starting rotation, despite another rough outing against the Seattle Mariners Thursday, April 17. One inning has cost him in three of his four starts this season, and 17 of the 20 runs he's allowed have come in three innings. SP Nick Martinez is a candidate to enter the rotation if the team makes a change. SPs Nick Tepesch and Scott Baker are other options in the minors.

FANTASY TIP: The experiment with Scheppers as a starter could soon be coming to an end. His outing next week will likely determine his fate. There are better options out there on the waiver wire in mixed leagues right now.

Rangers | Rafael Perez released

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 15:18:04 -0700

The Texas Rangers released RP Rafael Perez Thursday, April 17.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez candidate for rotation

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 15:13:12 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said RP Carlos Martinez is a candidate to enter the rotation if SP Joe Kelly's (hamstring) stay on the disabled list is prolonged. Martinez would need some time to be stretched out for the rotation.

FANTASY TIP: Tyler Lyons is likely to be called up to fill in in the short term, but Martinez has much more upside if he's starting. Stay tuned to the prognosis for Kelly, since that'll determine what the team does with Martinez.

Yankees | David Robertson throws 'pen

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 15:10:11 -0700

New York Yankees RP David Robertson (groin) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Thursday, April 17, and said he felt good. He'll pitch in a minor league game Saturday, April 19, and is expected to return from the disabled list Tuesday, April 22.

Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks sick

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 15:08:06 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks (flu, calf) is dealing with the flu and has been sent back to Boston.

FANTASY TIP: This illness could set Middlebrooks back a few days as he tries to return from his calf injury.

Royals | Lorenzo Cain to DL

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 14:59:56 -0700

The Kansas City Royals placed OF Lorenzo Cain (groin) on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, April 17, and recalled SP Justin Marks from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move.

FANTASY TIP: Jarrod Dyson should benefit the most with Cain heading to the sidelines, but he could enter into a platoon in center field with Justin Maxwell. Add Dyson in deep mixed leagues and AL-onlys if your outfield depth is hurting.

Red Sox | Shane Victorino beginning rehab assignment this weekend

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 14:56:55 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (hamstring) will start his rehab assignment Saturday, April 19, likely with Triple-A Pawtucket. He'll play Monday, April 21, Tuesday, April 22, and could return by Thursday, April 24.

FANTASY TIP: Things will get a bit interesting with the outfield alignment when Victorino returns. John Farrell will likely go with Jackie Bradley Jr., Grady Sizemore and Victorino most often if he values defense first. That means Daniel Nava and Jonny Gomes will lose some value.

Padres | Josh Johnson to see doctor Tuesday

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 14:55:46 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Josh Johnson (forearm) will meet with Dr. James Andrews Tuesday, April 22, according to manager Bud Black. Andrews will check Johnson's ligaments, forearm flexor tendons and the back of his elbow.

FANTASY TIP: Many have likely moved on from Johnson at this point because of his injury history. If you're waiting, you'll have to wait a little longer. There looks like a decent chance he'll have to undergo Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career.

Orioles | Manny Machado approaching rehab assignment

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 14:14:13 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado (knee) ran the bases again Thursday, April 17, and did well. He will slide for the first time Friday, April 18, and play in an extended spring game Saturday, April 19. He could play in three to five extended spring games before embarking on a rehab assignment.

FANTASY TIP: Machado's return will likely be sometime in early May if he doesn't hit any road blocks in his recovery from offseason knee surgery. Stay patient, but don't expect the pre-injury form of Machado immediately.

Mariners | Ji-Man Choi to restricted list

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 14:12:54 -0700

Phillies | Injury doesn't bother A.J. Burnett

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 13:47:32 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett (hernia) allowed only three hits in seven shutout innings to beat the Atlanta Braves Thursday, April 17, and he struck out five in the game. Burnett received a cortisone injection Monday, April 14, for an inguinal hernia, and he plans to pitch through it the entire season.

FANTASY TIP: Burnett's outing Thursday eased some of his owner's concerns after he was diagnosed with a hernia several days ago. It won't be all smooth sailing for him this year, but this is a good sign that the injury won't impact him too much.
