Cubs | Jorge Soler moved up to Iowa

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 21:14:04 -0700

The Chicago Cubs promoted OF Jorge Soler from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa Tuesday, July 22.

FANTASY TIP: Soler is one of the team's top prospects, and he is a must-have fantasy option in long-term keeper leagues. He could possibly see a call-up when rosters expand September 1, so he isn't a bad stash candidate in NL-only non-keeper leagues, either.

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 21:13:37 -0700

The Chicago Cubs promoted OF Albert Almora to Double-A Tennessee Tuesday, July 22.

Giants | Eli Manning's ankle looks fine

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 21:13:07 -0700

New York Giants QB Eli Manning (ankle) has shown no ill effects during camp from ankle surgery that sidelined him for earlier offseason activities.

FANTASY TIP: Although it's good news that Manning is healthy, it doesn't change the fact that he will be playing behind a questionable offensive line and has led the NFL in interceptions three times. Draft him as a QB2.

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 21:12:21 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers C Jonathan Lucroy blasted a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday, July 22, against the Cincinnati Reds. He entered the game with just 21 hits over his past 105 at-bats (.200) over the past 25 games. It was his second career walk-off homer, both coming against Cincinnati.

FANTASY TIP: Hopefully this homer will be the boost Lucroy needs to get back on track. His fantasy owners certainly hope so.

Giants | Andre Williams used as goal-line back

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 20:53:42 -0700

New York Giants RB Andre Williams served as the team's goal-line back Tuesday, July 22.

FANTASY TIP: It remains to be seen if Williams becomes the next Brandon Jacobs for the Giants, but as long as he is receiving regular touches around the goal line, he is relevant for fantasy purposes. He will likely be a touchdown-dependent option, but he is still worth grabbing late in drafts to provide some depth at the RB spot.

Rams | Tavon Austin discusses learning the game

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 20:48:21 -0700

St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin admitted that he was lost as a rookie in 2013, struggling to pick up the playbook. The No. 8 overall pick said it was like a foreign language to him but added that now he has a much better grasp of the system. "I understand the plays, the depth, the routes, the splits and everything," Austin said. "I just feel good that I can make some plays. Definitely, the game's slowed down for me."

FANTASY TIP: The coaching staff is working in creative ways to get Austin the ball in space, but they also know he is not an every-down player and won't use him that way. He is a high-risk, high-reward WR3 in PPR leagues.

Giants | Tom Coughlin not happy with team's conditioning

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 20:44:01 -0700

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was not happy that several players were forced to leave practice with dehydration issues Tuesday, July 22. "It pisses me off," Coughlin said. "After all this [meaning the long off-season program]. Then all of a sudden we're going to have guys that can't stay on the field for more than an hour and a half?"

49ers | Stevie Johnson, Brandon Lloyd not locks to make roster

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 20:21:05 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson is the frontrunner for the No. 3 WR job, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, but he added that neither Johnson nor WR Brandon Lloyd is a lock to make the roster. Maiocco believes that Johnson's salary and the fact that Lloyd doesn't contribute on special teams would make them expendable if a younger receiver proves capable of filling the No. 3 WR role.

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 20:08:08 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (hand) was hit on the right hand by a pitch and forced to leave the game Tuesday, July 22, against the Milwaukee Brewers. X-rays were negative on the first two fingers of his right hand. He is listed as day to day.

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 20:07:33 -0700

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 20:06:46 -0700

The Cincinnati Reds continue to have trade talks with the Philadelphia Phillies about OF Marlon Byrd, according to sources.

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 20:05:33 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado (back) was scratched from the lineup Tuesday, July 22, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim due to a tight lower back. 2B Ryan Flaherty made the start at third base in Machado's absence.

FANTASY TIP: The injury comes the night after his career-high 19-game on-base streak came to an end. Tough week for Machado's fantasy owners. He is likely considered day to day.
