Detroit Tigers OF Andy Dirks (back) underwent a microdiscectomy Monday, March 10, in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the procedure was seemed successful. He's not allowed to do any physical activity besides walk for three weeks and is expected to be sidelined for a total of 12 weeks.
FANTASY TIP: The positive for hopeful AL-only owners of Dirks is that no complications were discovered or arose, if that had been possible. Rajai Davis is expected to benefit most from Dirks' absence primarily because the speedy outfielder is the only fantasy-relevant player who could.

Oakland Athletics SS Addison Russell (hamstring) exited his club's spring training contest Monday, March 10, because of a strained right hamstring. He left the stadium on a cart, but it's likely a precaution and the severity of the injury is unknown.
FANTASY TIP: The exciting prospect wasn't going to break camp with the parent club and probably won't debut until September, if he does, so this shouldn't affect his draft stock.

Tampa Bay Rays Cs Ryan Hanigan and Jose Molina might end up with an even split of playing time this season, as both catchers are great defensively but are question marks with the bat.
FANTASY TIP: Neither catcher is very intriguing as a backup catcher in an AL-only league, but Hanigan probably has slightly more upside with the stick. However, if playing time is split evenly, neither is probably worth a selection.

New York Mets 1B Ike Davis (calf) could serve as the designated hitter by this weekend, according to manager Terry Collins. Davis hasn't played for a week and is now wearing a walking boot on his right foot due to a calf strain. "When he did it, he tried to play. He thought it was something that was going to go away in two days," Collins said. "And here we are five days out, it's just not getting better very fast. So it's a little bit of a concern. The trainers did say, 'Look, he feels better.' The boot, as we all know, is a precaution. It does help the healing process."
